Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (7-15) got back into the win column by ending a seven-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory over the Wichita Wingnuts (10-12) in front of 3,291 fans on Saturday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.
The Canaries drew first blood in the bottom of the second inning. Trevor Lawhorn started the inning with a double. Lawhorn scored on a two-out single by Joe Dempsey to give the Birds an early lead, 1-0.
Sioux Falls extended their lead in the fourth inning. Patrick Reilly tripled to get on base, and J.D. Reininger brought him in with his third home run of the season. Reininger's blast gave the Canaries a 3-0 lead. Dempsey then reached on an error by Wichita shortstop Josh Horn. Joe Anthonsen singled to send Dempsey to third. After Anthonsen stole second, Tim Hutting hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Dempsey for a 4-0 Canaries advantage. Cody Haerther then singled off the right field wall, allowing Anthonsen to score. Haerther was thrown out at second on the play to end the inning with the Birds in front 5-0.
Wichita mounted a comeback beginning in the sixth inning. Michael Thompson hit his fifth home run of the year to put Wichita on the scoreboard, 5-1. In the seventh inning, a two run homer by Joe Muich got the Wingnuts within a pair, 5-3. Wichita got one more in the eighth inning as Kelly Hunt singled to score Greg Porter. The run got Wichita within one, 5-4. However, Canaries closer Aaron Cotter then came on to get the final four outs of the game and seal the victory.
Noel Baca (3-3) allowed just one run on three hits in six innings to get the win for the Canaries. Adam Cowart (5-5) suffered his first defeat in four starts against the Canaries this season. The save for Cotter is his fourth of the season.
The Canaries and Wingnuts will wrap-up the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. Sunday's game will be a Sundae Sunday featuring specials on ice cream sundaes at the concession stand.
