Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SHREVEPORT, La. - For the first time this season, the Shreveport-Bossier Captains had one of their players given a weekly or monthly honor, as rookie right-handed pitcher Jimmy Heard was named the Meyvn Baseball Company American Association Pitcher of the Month for July by PA-Sportsticker, the official statistician of the league.

The former Airline High School and Northwestern State standout made his pro debut with five shutout innings on June 27 against Pensacola, and followed that up in his first July start with six scoreless innings to beat Fort Worth on July 1. He got a no-decision in his next start at El Paso, but the Captains won anyway, before hurling six innings and allowing one run in a win over Wichita on July 10. He allowed only one unearned run to beat the Pelicans for the second time on July 15. Heard's last two starts have been longer, as he pitched 7 1/3 innings to beat the Cats for the second time on July 22, and then dominated the Diablos for his first road win on the 27th, allowing three runs in seven frames with a season-high seven strikeouts.

In the month, Heard was 5-0 with a 2.17 ERA, holding opponents to a .229 batting average and allowing only nine earned runs with nine walks and 27 strikeouts in 37 1/3 innings. Overall, the righty is 6-0 with a 1.91 ERA. Most importantly, though, the Captains are 7-0 in games that Heard starts.

The righty's next scheduled start is Saturday night against Lincoln, trying to give the Captains a split of the first two games of their three-game set.
