Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, VA - Former Admiral Grant Besse scored twice to lead the South Carolina Stingrays to a 5-2 victory over the Norfolk Admirals Friday night at Scope.
After scoreless first period, Norfolk forward Chris Crane lit the lamp for the third time in two games, when he hurled a shot from just below the blue line that beat a screened Parker Milner for the tally.
The Admirals had a chance to add their lead halfway through the second period with a power play chance. However, South Carolina forward Andrew Cherniwchan turned it into his team's advantage. Cherniwchan worked the puck around an Admirals defender and then carved a backhand shot high into the net past Norfolk netminder Ty Reichenbach for the shorthanded strike to even the game at 1-1.
Moments later Cherniwchan set up the go-ahead marker when he fed a pass from the corner to Grant Besse in front. Besse flexed a shot from the slot low into the net to put the Rays ahead by one after two periods.
In the third, the Stingrays grabbed command of the game. Jake Kamrass tipped and redirected a shot into the Norfolk net to put South Carolina out in front by a 3-1 count at 3:17 of the period.
Three minutes later, Besee struck again, this time on a backhand shot that squeezed through the five-hole of Reichenbach and trickled across the goal line. Just 37-seconds later, South Carolina made it a 5-1 game on a tally by Matt Pohlkamp.
The Admirals grabbed some momentum late in the game on a power play goal by TJ Melancon. Melancon pin-pointed a nice shot into the top corner of the net to pull Norfolk within three, but the Rays held on to earn the 5-2 victory.
