San Antonio Missions News Release
SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Missions continued their six-game series with the Wichita Wind Surge on Friday night. Friday night's ballgame was the opposite of Thursdays as the two clubs did not score a run until the 10th inning. With two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, Willie Joe Garry Jr. left the yard for a walk-off homer. The Missions were held scoreless in a 2-0 defeat.
Marco Raya was the starting pitcher for the Wind Surge. The Missions threatened to score in the top of the first frame. With one man down, Jackson Merrill reached on a ground-rule double. The 21-year-old retired the next two batters to leave Merrill stranded at second base.
Ryan Bergert was the starting pitcher for the Missions. Coming off his terrific performance against Amarillo, the right-hander was tough to hit on Friday night. Wichita did not get a runner to second base until the bottom of the fourth inning. Bergert issued a one-out walk to Patrick Winkel who made it to second on a passed ball by Juan Zabala. He was left stranded. The Ohio native had six strikeouts through four innings.
Raya put together a stellar outing for Wichita. In four innings of work, he allowed just two hits and no walks while striking out two batters. Taylor Floyd took over for the right-hander in the top of the fifth inning.
Bergert's night came to an end after the sixth inning. The right-hander, who struck out nine batters in his last start, punched out eight batters on Friday night. He allowed three hits while walking one batter. Henry Henry took the mound for the Missions to start the seventh inning.
The right-hander was reinstated from the development list one day ago when Michel Baez was moved to Triple-A. Henry struck out the first batter he faced before giving up a double to Tanner Schobel. He left the runner stranded after retiring the next two batters.
In the top of the ninth, Aaron Rozek took the mound for his fourth inning of work. Merrill kept the inning alive with a two-out single. Graham Pauley flew out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Efrain Contreras took the mound for the Missions with the hopes of extending the scoreless tie to extras. The right-hander allowed a leadoff base hit to Seth Gray before striking out Alex Isola. Winkel singled into center field and Gray advanced to third base. With runners on the corners and one out, Contreras struck out Schobel. Aaron Sabato stepped up to the plate with the winning run 90 feet away. Sabato struck out swinging to end the inning.
In the top of the 10th inning, Pauley was the placed runner at second base and Miguel Rodriguez took over on the mound. With Nathan Martorella at the plate, a wild pitch allowed Pauley to move to third base. The slugger grounded out to first base and Pauley remained at third. Juan Fernandez struck out looking for out number two. Cole Cummings grounded out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, Seth Mayberry took the mound and Will Holland was the runner at second base. Alerick Soularie began the inning by popping out behind second base. Jake Rucker lined out to Merrill at shortstop for the second out. On the next pitch, Willie Joe Garry Jr. ended the game with a two-run walk-off home run.
