Benedict Deals Seven Scoreless as Curve Blank Rock Cats

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Matt Benedict tossed seven scoreless innings as the Altoona Curve took the series finale over the New Britain Rock Cats, 5-0, on Thursday afternoon at New Britain Stadium.

The Curve (59-53) tossed their eleventh shutout win of the season, avoiding a sweep of at the hands of the Rock Cats (53-57).

Benedict (Win, 5-5) allowed just five hits and a walk over his seven innings while striking out two.

Jon Schwind gave the Curve a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the second inning.

The Curve extended the lead to 2-0 on Adam Frazier's second double of the game in the fifth. Barrett Barnes added a solo home run in the sixth against New Britain starter Matt Flemer (Loss, 6-8).

In the eighth, Eric Wood hit an RBI double and Erich Weiss followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Curve ahead, 5-0.

Barnes had three hits, including his solo homer. Frazier finished the game 2-for-5 with an RBI. Wood went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

Brett McKinney worked around a single to post a scoreless eighth inning, striking out one. Jhondaniel Medina also gave up a hit but kept the Rock Cats off the scoreboard in the ninth inning.

The Curve return home on Friday night at begin a series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Right-hander Chad Kuhl (8-4, 2.80) takes the mound for the Curve, opposed by Richmond righty Tyler Beede (2-5, 5.51).

The first 1,500 fans through the gates will receive a Pete Vuckovich bobblehead, courtesy of Clarion University. The gates at Peoples Natural Gas Field open up at 6 p.m. with first pitch set for 7 p.m.
