Bears Take Two of Three

February 23, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release

The HERSHEY BEARS Hockey Club won two of three games last week, defeating Syracuse and Philadelphia to maintain a lead in the East Division with 22 games remaining.

HERSHEY travels to Binghamton Wednesday and Friday before hosting Norfolk Saturday and Providence Sunday at GIANT Center. Saturday's game represents the three-quarter mark of the 2008-09 season. Tickets for all BEARS home games are on sale now at the GIANT Center box office, or by calling (717) 534-3911.

Mayotte bags first AHL win: Goaltender Kris Mayotte made 10 saves on 11 shots in a relief appearance Saturday night, and won his first American Hockey League game in the process. Mayotte, signed to a professional tryout contract two weeks ago from the Johnstown Chiefs (ECHL), made just his third AHL appearance and earned the victory. The Pittsburgh native is HERSHEY'S fifth different goaltender to win at least one game this season, joining Simeon Varlamov, Michal Neuvirth, Daren Machesney and Bobby Goepfert.

Winning more than most: The BEARS enter play this week with the best winning percentage (.672) in the Eastern Conference and the third best winning percentage in the AHL. Only the Milwaukee Admirals (.696) and the Manitoba Moose (.675) have better marks than HERSHEY approaching the three-quarter mark of the 2008-09 season.

Still packing a one-two punch: Keith Aucoin's overtime game- winning goal Saturday night gave him 74 points on the season, still tops in the AHL. Alexandre Giroux, with a goal and an assist Saturday, now has 67 points, still good for second in the circuit. Aucoin has led the league in scoring since opening night in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on October 8 when he began the season with a five-point effort.

Back in Bingo: Even with two games in Binghamton this week, the BEARS will still return to Broome County on March 27.

Washington update: Washington defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2 Sunday afternoon at Verizon Center. The Capitals maintain a 14-point lead over the Carolina Hurricanes in the Southeast Division, and are currently ranked second in the Eastern Conference with 81 points. Only the San Jose Sharks (89), the Boston Bruins (88) and the Detroit Red Wings (86) have more points than Washington entering play this week.
