Last Week's Games
Wednesday, February 18th - Lake Erie Monsters 2 at Quad City Flames 3
Quad City concluded their season series vs. Lake Erie on Wednesday with a 3-2 win over the Monsters. The victory established a new franchise record for consecutive wins as the Flames improved to 5-0-0-0 in their last quintet of contests. Brett Sutter, Kyle Greentree, Jamie Lundmark and supplied goals while Kevin Lalande turned aside 27 shots to improve to 3-0-0 on the season. The Flames took a 1-0 lead when Brett Sutter scored the only goal of the opening period. On a rush into the Lake Erie zone, Cam Cunning left a drop pass that Sutter fired home from the right wing circle for his sixth goal of the year. The tally stood up as the only goal of the opening 20 minutes while the Flames outshot Lake Erie 12-6.
Kyle Greentree netted his 28th goal of the year on a feed from David Van der Gulik at 3:06 of the second period. The tally extended the Flames lead to two goals. Jamie Lundmark jammed home his 15th goal of the year on a goal-mouth scramble during a Flames power play at 9:18 of the middle frame. The goal was assisted by Anders Eriksson and Kyle Greentree and pushed the Flames lead to 3-0. Lake Erie got on the board less than 90 seconds later when Matt Hendricks rifled home a shot from the right wing circle for his fifth goal of the season. Hendricks' goal was the final marker of the frame and set the score at 3-1 after 40 minutes. Lake Erie's Codey Burki scored the only goal of the closing frame with 3:38 left in the period to spur a late closing kick by the Monsters. But, Lake Erie would pull no closer as the Flames earned their first ever regulation victory vs. the Monsters.
Friday, February 20th - San Antonio Rampage 4 at Quad City Flames 5 Shootout
The Flames rallied in the third period to beat San Antonio 5-4 in a shootout on Friday at the i wireless Center. Adam Cracknell scored twice in regulation and added a shootout goal. David Van der Gulik and John Armstrong also scored in regulation while Kris Chucko converted in the shootout. Kevin Lalande entered the game in relief and stopped 12 of the 13 shots he faced before stoning all four shooters he faced in the shootout. With the win, the Flames extend their franchise record winning streak to six games. A wild first period featured a goal for each side, 22 penalty minutes and six combined power plays. The Rampage took a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal by Jeff Hoggan at 5:24 of the period. Hoggan scored off a goal-mouth scramble with assists to Garth Murray and David Schlemko. Off the draw following the Rampage goal, J.D. Watt fought San Antonio forward Simon Ferguson. The entertaining bout resulted in five penalty minutes for both players.
It was the seventh consecutive game with a penalty for Watt, which establishes a new Flames franchise record for the most consecutive games with at least one penalty. The Rampage went on to carry momentum through a good portion of the period. San Antonio outshot Quad City 14-7 in the opening period, but the Flames were still able to net the equalizer before the period ended. David Van der Gulik scored his 14th goal of 2008-09 when he shot home the rebound from a Gord Baldwin chance. Anders Eriksson contributed the secondary assist. The helper stretched Eriksson's assist streak to seven games, a new Flames franchise record. The tally came with just 2:40 left in the period and the game was tied at one at one frame.
Quad City captured the lead for the first time just 15 seconds into the second period when John Armstrong scored on a wraparound chance. The rookie's fourth tally of the year gave Quad City a 2-1 edge. The Rampage answered at 5:28 of the middle frame during a 5-on-3 power play. Jeff Hoggan scored his 20th goal of the year during the man advantage on a shot from the right wing circle. San Antonio re-captured the lead seven minutes later when Garth Murray scored an even strength goal off a one-timer following a cross-ice pass from Joel Perrault. The Rampage held their lead through the remainder of the middle period and led 3-2 after 40 minutes. The Rampage pushed their lead to two goals when David Spina scored on the power play at 2:52 of the third period. The Flames answered back immediately as Adam Cracknell scored after Carsen Germyn forced a San Antonio turnover just 38 seconds after the San Antonio tally. Cracknell struck again on a power-play with 1:50 left in regulation to tie the game. After a scoreless overtime session that featured two minutes of San Antonio power-play time, the teams headed to the shootout. In the extra session, Adam Cracknell and Kris Chucko scored while Kevin Lalande stopped all four shooters he faced to earn the win.
Sunday, February 22nd - Quad City Flames 1 at Peoria Rivermen 2 Overtime
The Flames earned a regulation point thanks to a late shorthanded tally by Warren Peters on Sunday in Peoria.
A 2-1 overtime loss to the Rivermen snapped the Flames franchise record winning streak at six games, but the team did earn a point for the seventh consecutive outing. Peoria's Trent Whitfield scored the only goal of the opening frame to give the Rivermen a 1-0 edge. Whitfield scored his 16th goal of the year with just 88 seconds gone in the game. The goal was scored off a 3-on-2 rush with Carl Corrazzini and Steve Regier earning the helpers. The teams skated scoreless through the second period. Kris Chucko had the best scoring opportunities of the frame including a breakaway chance that was denied by Peoria netminder Ben Bishop.
The Flames got into penalty trouble late in regulation as J.D. Watt was sent off on a boarding major with 8:19 left in the contest. With the Flames killing Watt's penalty, Warren Peters took a pass from David Van der Gulik and streaked into the Peoria zone. The Flames captain sent a shot past Bishop to tie the game at one on just the second shorthanded goal of the season for Quad City. Once the penalty kill resumed, Ryan Wilson and David Van der Gulik were both whistled off for minor penalties. The Flames were able to withstand the Peoria power play to earn a regulation point. In the overtime, Julian Talbot scored his 15th goal of the season at 3:01 of the extra frame to win the game for Peoria.
