Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums scored four runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning and never looked back as the Beach Bums topped the Schaumburg Boomers 10-2 on Tuesday night.
Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth Traverse City kicked the offense into gear as a single by Chase Burch and a walk to Zach Kometani put two runners on for Carlo Testa who doubled into centerfield, scoring two and knotting the game. Marcus Nidiffer promptly singled Testa home to make it 3-2 Beach Bums. Sean Gusrang followed with a single and D'Marcus Ingram was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Ryan Still who hit a sac fly to center, bringing in Nidiffer for a 4-2 lead.
Traverse City would strike again in the sixth as Gusrang doubled with one out. Two batters later Still walked. Taylor Wrenn came up and blasted his fifth homerun of the season making it 7-2. In the seventh, Kometani led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a catcher's balk. Gusrang made the unusual call a moot point as he cranked his fourth homer of the year two pitches later, extending the advantage to 9-2. TC added an eighth inning run on a Jose Vargas double, plating Still who walked to lead off the inning.
The offense was plenty enough for Scott Dunn who allowed two runs on six hits through six innings in becoming the first Frontier League pitcher in 2013 to get to seven wins. Dunn (7-0) worked his way out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth by getting Brian McConkey to bounce a ball back to the mound and start a 1-2-3 double play. Chris Squires was perfect during three innings of work, striking out four to claim his first save of the year. Cody Griebling (4-3) suffered the loss for the Boomers.
Offensively, all nine batters reached base for Traverse City. Gusrang led the 12-hit charge with three base knocks. Vargas, Kometani, and Testa each had a pair of hits for the Beach Bums.
The middle game of the series comes up on Wednesday at 7:05 pm when Jake Sabol (5-2, 1.69) gets the start for Traverse City against Matt Kuna (2-0, 1.07) for the Boomers. It is a Weenie Wednesday with $1 hot dogs at the ballpark, presented by Kent Quality Foods and Gordon Food Service.
