Joliet Slammers News Release

(Loves Park, IL) - The Joliet Slammers offense needed a ballgame like this.

The Slammers (14-20) crushed the Rockford Aviators (7-26) 15-1 on Tuesday night by scoring a season high 15 runs on a franchise record 21 hits. Nick Akins also set a team record five hits in one game going 5-6 with two home runs and six runs batted in.

Joliet also recorded a season high nine walks in the victory over the Aviators.

Almost lost in the offensive explosion for Joliet was starter Chuck Lofgren (4-2) who picked up the victory for the Slammers, pitching seven innings and only allowing one unearned run on five hits.

Akins hit a solo home run, his third homerun of the season, to start the scoring for Joliet in the top of the second. The Slammers added another run in the third inning to extend their lead after three innings to 2-0 over the Aviators.

Akins picked up his second hit of the game leading off the fourth inning for Joliet and catcher Kolin Conner followed by advancing to first after being hit by a pitch from Trevor Harden and Seth Schwindenhammer loaded the base paths on a base-on-balls.

Robby Kuzdale recorded not only his first hit as a Slammer but his first run batted in after singling to keep the bases full and drive Akins home on the play. Marquis Riley followed by hitting a second RBI single, driving Conner home and giving the Slammers a 4-0 lead.

Lofgren continued to hold the Aviators in check through the fourth and the fifth innings and in the top of the sixth, Joliet would break the game open.

Akins stepped to the plate in the sixth inning with two outs and the bases loaded and he cleared the bases on a three-run double, giving him his fourth hit of the night and his fifth run batted home. Joliet now led 8-0 over Rockford.

Rockford finally put a run on the board as Matt Greener scored on an RBI single from Tyler Smith in the seventh to make it an 8-1 Joliet lead.

In the eighth inning Akins continued to amaze as the Slammers right fielder hit his second solo home run of the night, picking up his sixth RBI and a Joliet Slammers' new record of five hits in one game.

The Slammers were not done in the inning however as three more runs touched home to make it a 12-1 lead, one on a RBI single form Riley and two more on an RBI double from Michael Wing.

Joliet's offense was not done in the ninth as three more runs touched home to stretch the eventual final score to 15-1.

The Slammers will try to win the series Wednesday evening with Shawn Kale (1-1) making his third start for Joliet. First pitch is at 7:05 and the 1340 WJOL pre game begins at 6:50 p.m.
