Miners Lose Opener in River City

O'Fallon, MO - The Miners had an early lead against River City but the Rascals scored eight runs in the final two innings to defeat the Miners 10-5. The Miners are now 17-17 on the season.
Gerardo Avila got the Miners on the board first off Rascals starter Casey Barnes as he hit a grand slam to give the Miners a 4-0 lead. Jon Eisen, Carlos Colmenares and Carlos Mendez all scored on the play. The Miners added to their lead in the top of the third inning off Barnes as Ken Gregory hit his eighth double of the season to score Mendez and give the Miners a 5-0 lead.
Blake Nation didn't factor in the decision as he pitched five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) and walked six batters with three strikeouts.
River City scored two runs off Nation in the bottom of the fifth inning. Nation would leave the game and hand the ball to reliever Jon Mark Abbey who allowed two runs (one earned) in the bottom of the seventh inning. Dayne Quist (4-2) allowed two runs (one earned) in the bottom of the seventh inning to receive the loss as River City would take a 6-5 lead.
Matt Sergey pitched the botttom of the eighth inning and allow four runs off three hits and two walks. He recorded one strikeout. River City would take a 10-5 lead and close out the game in the top of the ninth inning.
The Miners will be sending Preston Vancil (3-1, 1.99 ERA) to the mound on Wednesday as he will be facing his former team for the first time. First pitch will get underway at 7:05 pm at TR Hughes Ballpark.
