Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Binghamton, NY - The Baysox (39-39) used a four-run fourth inning to rally from three runs down and beat the Binghamton Mets (36-41) 8-6 Thursday evening for their fifth straight win.
With the win, the Baysox improve to .500 for the first time since the second game of the season when they were 1-1. The low point of the season came as recently as June 6 when the team was 11 games below .500.
The Baysox took advantage of several defensive mistakes to stay ahead of Binghamton despite being outhit. The Baysox scored two runs as a result of passed balls, including the first run in a three run ninth inning that was the difference in the game.
Binghamton struck first in the bottom of the first inning against Baysox right-handed starting pitcher Bobby Bundy. Juan Lagares hit a lead off single to center field and Reese Havens followed with a walk. Jefry Marte plated Lagares with a single to left field and both runners advanced on a throwing error by Josh Barfield. With one out, Wilmer Flores hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Havens and give the B-Mets a 2-0 lead.
The B-Mets extended their lead in the bottom of the third inning. Eric Campbell hit a one out single to right field and moved to second base on a throwing error by Jai Miller. Flores brought Campbell home with a single to center field that made the score 3-0.
The Baysox came storming back in the top of the fourth inning against Binghamton starter Darin Gorski. Barfield hit a lead off single to second base and stole second with first baseman Robbie Widlansky batting. Widlansky then singled to left field to move Barfield to third where he scored when shortstop Manny Machado singled to left field. Designated hitter Buck Britton kept things going with a single to center field that plated Widlansky and moved Machado to third base. Third baseman Zelous Wheeler then reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Machado to score from third. Britton reached third safely on the play as B-Mets first baseman Campbell was unable to record an out. With Miller batting, Britton scored on a throwing error by catcher Juan Centeno to give the Baysox a 4-3 lead.
Binghamton tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning against Baysox reliever Eddie Gamboa, who entered the game in the fourth inning after Bundy was struck by a line drive. Centeno hit a lead off single to left field but was thrown out at second base when Pedro Zapata reached on a force out. With Lagares batting, Zapata advanced to third base on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt by Gamboa. Lagares plated Zapata with a sacrifice fly that tied the game 4-4.
Bowie jumped back into the lead in the top of the eighth inning against Binghamton reliever Ryan Fraser. Center fielder Antoan Richardson drew a lead off walk and moved to second base after a sacrifice bunt by second baseman Jonathan Schoop. Richardson moved to third on a groundout by Barfield and scored on a passed ball to make the score 5-4.
The Baysox added several insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning against Binghamton reliever Robert Carson. Wheeler hit a lead off single to center field and Miller followed with a walk. Catcher Brian Ward drew a walk to load the bases and Wheeler scored on a passed by with Richardson batting. With two outs, Barfield doubled to left field to clear the bases and give the Baysox an 8-4 lead.
Binghamton rallied in the bottom of the ninth against Baysox reliever Clay Schrader. Schrader walked the first three batters he faced to load the bases before being replaced on the mound by left-handed reliever Pedro Viola. Viola walked the first batter he faced to allow a run, but then got Wilfredo Tovar to ground into a double play that plated one run and moved another runner to third. Viola struck out Francisco Pena to limit the damage and end the game with the Baysox leading 8-6
Bundy pitched three and two-thirds innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out three batters and walking three in a no decision. Gamboa pitched two and one-third innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits while striking out one batter. Right-handed reliever Pat Egan pitched two scoreless innings and allowed just two hits while striking out two batters and walking two in the win. Schrader walked all three batters he faced and allowed two runs. Viola earned his fourth save of the season after he recorded all three outs in the ninth inning after entering the game with the tying run at the plate.
Fraser earned the loss for Binghamton as he pitched two innings and allowed one run on two hits while walking one batter.
The Baysox are on the road for eight games. They will return home on Wednesday, July 4 at 6:05 p.m. against the Harrisburg Senators. Tickets are on sale now for the Independence Day celebration that will feature an apple pie eating contest, fireworks and much more.
