
Trio of Sea Dogs Selected to Eastern League All-Star Squad

Portland, Maine- The Eastern League in conjunction with Reading Phillies have announced the rosters for the 2012 Eastern League All-Star Game. The Sea Dogs will send three players to the midsummer classic; outfielder Bryce Brentz, pitcher Chris Hernandez, and first baseman Reynaldo Rodriguez. The All Star Game will be played on Wednesday, July 11th at 7:05 PM at First Energy Stadium in Reading, Pennsylvania; the home of the Reading Phillies.
The All-Star Game will feature the Eastern Division All-Stars against the Western Division All-Stars. Each team will consist of 24 players. The All-Star teams were selected through fan voting along with selections from media personnel, club field personnel, and Eastern League administrators. Each Eastern League team has at least three players, including at least one pitcher and one position player. One position player and one pitcher from each team are selected through fan voting. Bryce Brentz and Chris Hernandez were fan selections from Portland.
Brentz has appeared in 71 games for the Sea Dogs this season hitting .294 (77-for-262) with ten home runs and 33 RBI. The 23 year-old was named the Eastern League and the Topps Player of the Month for May after hitting .388 with five home runs, 18 runs scored, and 11 RBI in 26 games. Baseball America lists Brentz as the fifth ranked prospect in the organization and the "Best Power Hitter" amongst Red Sox farmhands. In 2011 he was honored Red Sox Minor League Offensive Co-Player of the Year after hitting .306 with 25 doubles, 30 home runs, and 94 RBI between Single-A Greenville and Single-A Salem. Brentz was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the supplemental portion of the first round of the 2010 draft as the 36th overall pick.
Hernandez ranks seventh in the Eastern League with a 2.87 ERA and has notched a 4-6 record in 15 starts with the Sea Dogs this season. The 23 year-old lefty ranks second on the team with 47 strikeouts. In 2011 he was named to both the Carolina League mid and post-season All-Star squads posting a 10-7 record with a 3.18 ERA. The Miami, Florida native was signed by the Red Sox in the seventh round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft.
Rodriguez is hitting .252 with a team high 12 home runs and 36 RBI in 69 games this season with the Sea Dogs. He leads the Eastern League with 35 extra base hits and is tied for third with 21 doubles. In May, he clubbed a franchise record ten home runs. The 26 year-old was signed by the Red Sox as a non-drafted free agent on October 29, 2009.
