Late Rally Falls Short in 8-6 Loss

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning without the aid of a hit, but fell two runs short of a comeback, losing to the Bowie Baysox 8-6 Thursday night at NYSEG Stadium. Pinch-hitter Francisco Pena, representing the tying run, struck out against reliever Pedro Viola to end the ballgame.

The B-Mets walked nine times and collected eleven hits, but stranded 11 men on base and went just 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position in their fifth straight loss at home. The three-hour, thirty-four minute contest was the longest B-Met game of the season.

For the first time in the series, the B-Mets drew first blood. Jefry Marte gave Binghamton their first lead of the year against Bowie with an RBI single against Bobby Bundy in the first. Wilmer Flores followed with a sac fly and added a run-scoring single in the third, giving Binghamton a 3-0 lead.

The Baysox came storming back in the fourth against B-Mets starter Darin Gorski. Josh Barfield singled with one out to jumpstart a four-hit rally. Run-scoring singles by Manny Machado and Buck Britton got Bowie within one and an RBI fielder's choice by Zelous Wheeler tied the game at three. Catcher Juan Centeno allowed Britton to score the go-ahead run from third when he airmailed a throw to second on a fake steal by Wheeler.

Given a one-run lead, Bundy's night came to an abrupt end in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Jefry Marte seared a line drive off the righty's left leg for a single. Bundy was helped off the field and replaced by Eddie Gamboa.

Gorski rebounded from the rocky fourth and faced the minimum over his final two innings on the mound, allowing just one walk. He exited after allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits over six innings.

The lefty was taken off the hook when the B-Mets fought back to tie the game in sixth against Gamboa. Pedro Zapata reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third when Gamboa's pickoff attempt skipped down the right field line. Juan Lagares drove in the tying run with a sac fly to center.

Ryan Fraser took over for Gorski in the seventh and posted a perfect inning before running into trouble in the eighth. Antoan Richardson walked to start the frame, moved to third on a sac bunt and ground out, and scored on a passed ball by Centeno.

Trailing by one, Binghamton threatened in the eighth, but could not break through against reliever Pat Egan in his second inning. With runners at second and third, Reese Havens struck out looking to end the frame.

In the ninth, the Baysox tagged Robert Carson for three runs to extend their lead to four. They used two hits and took advantage of three walks, a season-high for the lefty, to add to their advantage.

The insurance runs proved vital for Bowie. Clayton Schrader entered in the ninth and immediately got Binghamton back in the game, walking all three he faced. Viola entered and continued the trend, issuing a free pass to Dustin Martin to force in a run. Viola settled down and induced Wilfredo Tover to bounce into a run-scoring double play before striking out Pena to end the ballgame.

Fraser (1-1) suffered his first loss as a B-Met while Egan (2-0) collected the victory. Viola nailed down his fourth save.

The B-Mets (36-41) look to avoid the sweep Friday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Greg Peavey takes the mound for Binghamton against RHP Zach Clark. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
