
Baysox Win Back-And-Forth Affair

Bowie, Md. - Altoona (29-53) twice tied the game, but the Baysox (45-38) were able to respond each time in a 7-6 win over the Curve to open the four-game series Monday evening.
The Baysox jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning against Altoona starter Joan Montero. K.D. Kang hit a lead off double to left field and moved to third base on a Niuman Romero groundout. Christian Walker then drew a walk and Dariel Alvarez brought Kang home with a single to center field. Chris Marrero followed with a single to right field and Walker was able to score after a fielding error by Willy Garcia. Michael Ohlman brought home the final run of the inning on a groundout to give Bowie a 3-0 lead.
Altoona came back to tie the game 3-3 in the top of the second inning against Baysox starter Anthony Vasquez. Keon Broxton hit a lead off single to center field and Willy Garcia followed with a home run to right field. Jarek Cunningham then hit a one-out double to left field and scored on an Alen Hanson two-out single to center field to tie the game.
Bowie answered with a pair of runs to retake the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Garabez Rosa reached second base on an error by the shortstop to open the inning and Kang followed with a one-out double to center field to bring Rosa home. With Kang on third base with two outs, Walker singled to right field to plate Kang and give the Baysox a 5-3 lead.
The Baysox added to the lead in the bottom of the third inning. David Adams hit a two-out ground rule double to right field and scored on a Rosa single to center field to give Bowie a 6-3 lead.
Elias Diaz got one run back for Altoona with a solo home run to left field in the top of the fifth inning that made the score 6-4.
The Curve came back to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning. Garcia led off the inning with his second home run of the game to left field. Cunningham then drew a one-out walk and reliever Jason Gurka replaced Vasquez on the mound. Gurka surrendered a pair of singles that allowed Cunningham to score and tie the game 6-6.
Bowie again took the lead right back in the bottom of the sixth inning against Altoona reliever Emmanuel de Leon. Johnny Ruettiger hit a one-out double to center field and moved to third base on a Kang groundout. Romero brought Ruettiger home with a two-out double to center field to give Bowie a 7-6 lead.
Vasquez pitched five and one-third innings and allowed six runs on eight hits while striking out five and walking two in a no decision. Gurka pitched one and two-thirds scoreless innings, allowing three hits, walking two and striking out one in the win. Reliever Marcel Prado pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Baysox, allowing one hit while walking two batters and striking out one. Baysox closer Oliver Drake picked up his league-leading 20th save of the season, striking out two in the ninth inning.
De Leon took the loss for Altoona, pitching one inning and allowing one run on two hits while striking out one.
LHP Tim Berry (4-4, 4.03) takes the mound for the Baysox Tuesday as the team plays the second game in a four game home series against the Altoona Curve. He will be opposed by LHP Joely Rodriguez (4-6, 4.21).
The Baysox are home through Thursday, July 3 for a four-game home series against the Altoona Curve. Promotional Highlights include Dollar Dog Night Tuesday, July 1 at 6:35 p.m. and Military Appreciation Night Wednesday, July 2 at 6:35 p.m.
