New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - In conjunction with the Eastern League, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats announced that right-handed pitcher Casey Lawrence has been named the league's Pitcher of the Week today. The honor comes after Lawrence came within one out of a perfect game in the nightcap of a doubleheader against New Britain on Friday night.
Lawrence's near-perfect outing was spoiled on a two-out single in the top of the seventh inning by Rock Cats pinch-hitter Mike Kvasnicka. While not perfect, Lawrence recorded the final out to preserve a complete-game, 8-0 victory and secure a sweep of the doubleheader. The McSherrystown, Pa., Native struck out eight to earn his fourth win of the season.
Arguably the Fisher Cats most consistent starter this season, Lawrence has compiled a 4-4 record with a 3.10 ERA in his first full season in Double-A. Over 14 appearances Lawrence has worked 78.1 innings, averaging better than six innings per start. He's allowed just 73 hits and 14 walks, generating the second lowest WHIP in the Eastern League at 1.11.
Despite missing more than three weeks with an injury, he is second on the club in innings pitched, and was ranked second in the league at the time of his injury in late May. Lawrence will carry a 13-inning scoreless streak, the longest of any Fisher Cat this season, into his next scheduled start on Thursday.
He is the first Fisher Cat to win a weekly award in 2014, and the first pitcher to win since Ryan Tepera was named the top pitcher for the week ending July 21, 2013.
The Fisher Cats begin a four-game road series tonight at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading, Pa. Scott Copeland (5-6, 3.68) will make the start in the opener at 7:05 p.m. Bob Lipman has the radio call beginning at 6:45 p.m. on WGIR 610 AM and www.nhfishercats.com.
The Fisher Cats return home on Friday night for a 4th of July Fireworks Extravaganza presented by Small Dog Electronics. Independence Day fireworks kick off a seven-game homestand through July 10. Tickets are available by visiting www.nhfishercats.com, stopping by the box office at the ballpark, or by calling (603) 641-2005.
