New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
READING, PA---Andy Burns hit a three-run homer and Mike McDade had four hits but Reading rallied for a 7-6 win over the Fisher Cats in the opener of a four-game series Monday night at First Energy Stadium.
Two streaks ended with the decision. New Hampshire (37-45) saw its seasons-best six game win streak snapped and Reading ended a losing streak which had reached 12 games.
The Fisher Cats took advantage of a Reading error in the top of the first inning to score an unearned run. Dalton Pompey reached on the error, stole his first base at the Double-A level, advanced to third on a groundout by Matt Newman and scored on a single by McDade.
Reading (33-46) answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the first to tie. Carlos Alonso walked, advanced to second on a groundout by Peter Lavin, advancing to third on K. C. Hobson's wild throw to second. He scored on a groundout by Kelly Dugan.
New Hampshire quickly regained the lead in the top of the second inning. Cory Aldridge beat out an infield single and after advancing to third on consecutive groundballs, scored on Kevin Nolan's sacrifice fly.
Burns hit his seventh homer of the season, a three-run shot, in the top of the third inning for a 5-1 lead. His blast followed singles by Matt Newman and McDade.
The Fisher Cats extended the lead to 6-1 in the top of the sixth inning. Jon Berti walked and stole second, scoring when Newman reached on an error.
New Hampshire starter Scott Copeland had breezed through the first half of the game, but Reading rallied to tie the contest with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kelly Dugan doubled home the first run, Aaron Altherr added an RBI double, Brock Stassi tripled home two more before K. C. Serna laid down a bunt, scoring Stassi to make it 6-6.
The Fightin Phils took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the seventh inning against reliever Scott Gracey (3-4). Peter Lavin walked, stole second and scored on a single by Jake Fox to put Reading up 7-6.
Kyle Simon (2-1) worked three innings in relief, allowing one unearned run, for the win. Matt Hoffman picked up his first save.
