Chesapeake Baysox News Release

ERIE, Pa. - The Bowie Baysox and the Erie SeaWolves split a doubleheader in Erie Saturday afternoon. First baseman Robbie Widlansky went four-for-four and drove in all five runs in the second game, the most runs driven in by a Bowie batter since teammate Brandon Waring drove in five runs against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats August 8, 2010.

The Baysox dropped the first game to the SeaWolves 15-6. Right-handed starter Oliver Drake made his second Double-A start and ran into trouble in the second inning. After retiring the leadoff batter, Drake gave up a double to right field by Ben Guez. After throwing a wild pitch that allowed Guez to advance to third base, Drake walked Francisco Martinez to put runners on the corners with one out. Bryan Holaday hit a ball to center field that Baysox leadoff hitter Xavier Avery could not field, and Guez scored the first run of the game on the error. Drake walked Justin Henry to load the bases and a single to center field by Jamie Johnson gave Erie a 2-0 advantage. Drake avoided further damage when Brandon Douglas grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Erie struck again with three more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Drake allowed a triple and an RBI double to the first two batters before being relieved by Tim Bascom. The right-hander recorded an out on a fielders choice against the first batter he faced, but Ben Guez hit an RBI double to center field and advanced to third when Avery threw home on the play. Guez scored the final run of the inning on a groundout by Martinez, putting Erie up 5-0 after three innings.

Bascom allowed three more runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings. After a pair of one-out singles in the fourth inning, Audy Ciriaco doubled to left field to drive in one run and Guez lifted a sacrifice fly to center field. Martinez capped the scoring in the inning with an RBI single to left field. Bascom retired the first two batters in the fifth inning before allowing three singles and a walk and being relieved by right-hander Ryohei Tanaka. Guez lifted a double to right field, plating Bryan Pounds and putting Bowie down 11-1.

While the SeaWolves were circling the basepaths, the Baysox offense struggled to get out of the batter's box. Erie starter Mark Sorenson held Bowie hitless through the first four innings. Right fielder Ronnie Welty broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff double in the fifth inning. Welty moved to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by catcher Steve Lerud. Second baseman Greg Miclat reached on a fielding error in the top of the sixth inning and scored when left fielder Jeff Fiorentino doubled to right field. Fiorentino scored on a single by Widlansky to cut the deficit to 11-3.

Erie added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Tanaka allowed a pair of singles to open the inning and loaded the bases with a one-out walk. Deik Scram launched a grand slam over the wall in right field, clearing the bases and giving Erie a 15-3 advantage.

Bowie scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning off of reliever Ramon Garcia. Shortstop Pedro Florimon led off with a single to left field but was retired on a fielders choice off the bat of Steve Lerud. Carlos Rojas walked to put runners on first and second and Miclat hit a one-out double to right field, plating Lerud. Fiorentino drove in Rojas and Miclat with a double to center field before Waring popped out to end the game.

Drake (0-1, 24.75) was charged with loss after allowing four earned runs on four hits and three walks in two innings pitched. Bascom allowed seven runs on nine hits and two walks in two and two-thirds innings and Tanaka was charged with four runs on four hits and a walk in one and one-third innings pitched.

After going 3-for-3 with three doubles and three RBIs in the first game, Guez continued to terrorize the Baysox in the second game. Guez opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the second inning, putting Erie in front 1-0.

Bowie answered with a run in the top of the fourth inning when Welty and Widlanksy hit back-to-back two-out doubles off of Erie starter Casey Crosby. Baysox catcher Caleb Joseph lined a single to right field to advance Widlanksy to third base and Joseph took second base on a wild pitch. Both runners were stranded when left fielder Miguel Abreu struck out to end the inning.

Erie took the lead again in the bottom of the fourth inning. Michael Bertram hit a one-out single to center field and Guez hit a two-run home run to center field that put Erie up 3-1. Bowie tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning off reliever Jared Gayhart. Waring led off the frame with a double to center field and Widlansky crushed a one-out fastball over the wall in right field to tie the game at 3-3.

Gamboa allowed a single to the first batter in the bottom of the sixth inning and was relieved by left-hander Pedro Viola. Gamboa lasted five innings for the Baysox, holding Erie to three runs on eight hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Viola (1-0, 1.23) retired all three batters he faced in the bottom of the sixth in order and earned his first win since June 30, 2010, when he threw two scoreless innings to beat Erie.

Austin Wood relieved Gayhart to open the top of the seventh inning. Miclat was hit by a pitch with one out and Waring followed with a walk. Wood struck out Welty for the second out of the inning, but Widlanksy knocked a double into left field, scoring Miclat and Waring and giving the Baysox their first lead of the game, 5-3.

Baysox closer Jose Diaz retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh inning to record his sixth save of the season. He leads the Eastern League with eight appearances this season, and is tied for the lead in saves.
