Baysox Sail Past Fisher Cats 4-2

Manchester, NH - The Baysox were out-hit by the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, but used two home runs to win their fourth game in a row 4-2. With the win, the Baysox are back to .500 at 30-30 for the season.

Leading 3-2 entering the eighth inning, a thunderstorm rolled through Northeast Delta Dental Stadium and delayed the game for one hour and eight minutes. It was the third consecutive start by left-handed pitcher Rick Zagone that was affected by a rain delay.

Zagone pitched five and one-third innings and allowed just two runs while striking out two though he did surrender nine hits as he earned the win. The Fisher Cats out-hit the Baysox 10-to-7, but were unable to score more runs despite having the bases loaded on two separate occasions.

The Baysox got on the board first with some help from Fisher Cats starter Joel Carreno in the top of the third inning. Third baseman Billy Rowell singled to the catcher and moved to second on a passed ball before center fielder Xavier Avery drew a walk. With second baseman Greg Miclat batting, Rowell moved to third base on a wild pitch and then scored on a second wild pitch that also moved Avery to second. Miclat grounded out but moved Avery to third where he scored when designated hitter Caleb Joseph hit a two-out home run to put the Baysox up 3-0.

New Hampshire got one run back against Zagone in the bottom of the fourth inning when Moises Sierra homered to right field with one out. The leadoff hitter in the inning, Mike McDade, singled to left field, but was thrown out at second by Buck Britton, making Sierra's home run a solo shot that made the score 3-1.

The Fisher Cats added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sierra drew a one out walk and moved to second on a single to left field by Travis d'Arnaud. Right-handed reliever Tim Bascom then entered in relief of Zagone and threw a wild pitch while facing Yan Gomes that moved the runners to second and third. Gomes grounded out to shortstop, but plated Sierra to make the score 3-2.

The Baysox extended the lead in the ninth inning after waiting through a XXX rain delay. Facing Ronald Uviedo, Britton homered to right field with two outs to make the score 4-2.

Bascom pitched one and two-thirds scoreless innings and didn't allow any hits but walked and struck out two batters. Right-handed reliever Raul Rivero pitched two scoreless innings and allowed one hit while striking out one and earning his first save of the season. Bascom and Rivero combined to pitch three and two-thirds innings and allowed just one hit and no runs.

Despite allowing a number of runners to get on base, Zagone and catcher Steve Lerud helped their own cause by recording two pickoffs at critical points in the game. In the bottom of the second inning, with two outs and the bases loaded, Lerud picked off Mark Sobolewski at first base to end the inning. In the fifth inning, Zagone picked off John Tolisano at second, which was significant because the next batter, Darin Mastroianni doubled and likely would have plated Sobolewski had he still been on second base.

Control by the pitchers was an issue for both teams Wednesday night as there were five wild pitches and a passed ball in the game. Carreno threw three wild pitches, Bascom threw two wild pitches and d'Arnaud was credited with a passed ball.

Thursday, RHP Zach Clark (5-4, 3.97) takes the mound for the Baysox as they take on the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. His opponent will be RHP Zach Stewart (3-3, 4.66).
