Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Altoona battled back to tie the game on Tuesday night only to see Bowie reclaim lead in the ninth and go on to win the second game of the series, 3-2, at Blair County Ballpark. The Curve had the tying run on third in the ninth with less than two down but failed to bring it home to tie the game.
With the game tied at two in the top of the ninth, Bowie got a leadoff single from Brandon Waring before Shelby Ford made an error on a sacrifice attempt by Billy Rowell that allowed both men to reach their respective bases safely. Xavier Avery laid down a sac bunt to move the runners up 90 feet before Michael Dubee (2-2) walked Greg Miclat to load up the bases with one down.
Robbie Widlansky hit a sacrifice fly to deep left that scored pinch runner Carlos Rojas from third to put Bowie in front, 3-2. Rowell was retired on the same play as he tried to take third and that sent the game to the last of the ninth where the Curve had an opportunity to tie the game.
Brad Chalk, who led off the inning with a walk, was standing on third with just one away but closer Jose Diaz struck out Starling Marte and Quincy Latimore to end the game.
Bowie jumped out to an early 2-0 cushion with runs in the first and third innings off starter Jared Hughes. Caleb Joseph drove in leadoff man Avery in the first to put Bowie out in front, 1-0. It was Joseph again in the third as he brought home Greg Miclat with a double play groundout that made it 2-0 Bowie.
Hughes settled in and did not allow a run over his final three innings of duty and completed 6.0 innings all together. He permitted the two runs on five hits while striking out four for his third quality start in his last four outings.
The 6-7 right hander was taken off the hook when Altoona tied the game in the seventh when Brock Holt hit a sac fly to bring home Ford to tie the game at two. Holt has now driven in a run in each of his last three games.
Diego Moreno made his 2011 Double-A debut on Tuesday night in relief of Hughes and pitched a scoreless sixth inning.
Back at .500, Altoona (22-22) will look for a win during the sunny hours on Wednesday as they take on the Baysox (23-22) at 10:30 a.m. from Blair County Ballpark. Wednesday is a Ponderosa Four-Pack Wednesday at BCB presented by Ponderosa Steakhouses. Fans can get four tickets, four hot dogs and four regular sodas all for just $30 thanks to Ponderosa. Gates for Wednesday morning's game will open up at 9:30 a.m.
RHP Mike Colla (2-1, 2.65) takes to the slab for Altoona in hopes of stopping the mini two-game slide while Bowie sends out RHP Wynn Pelzer (1-4, 3.38) in the third game of the four-game set. Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 10 a.m.
