Brampton Steelheads News Release
Mississauga, ON - The Steelheads played host to the division-leading North Bay Battalion tonight, as these two squads met for the fourth time this season. Each team came into this tilt with a streak; Mississauga had won four straight at home; North Bay had lost four straight games. The Steelheads hoped to continue with momentum, but were forced to take the ice without Sam Babintsev and Jimmy Lodge due to illness. Everett Clark took a puck to the face in warm-ups, but the injury did not hold him out of the game.
The Trout were forced to the penalty kill early on in the game. Before they could kill it off, Michael Amadio gave the Battalion the lead, beating Spencer Martin low on his blocker side. Midway through the frame, the Steelheads top line of Josh Burnside, Bryson Cianfrone and Lucas Venuto had the best chance of the period. Venuto got the puck behind Jake Smith, but the Fish couldn't bury the rebound. Mike Baird extended the Troops lead in the final minutes of the frame. Mississauga had their chances, remained competitive, but took a two-goal deficit into the intermission.
Sean Day showed his skating ability early in the second, moving inside-out around a defender, gaining entry into the offensive zone, but was stopped on the effort. Everett Clark followed up on the play with another chance as the Trout began to press. A slash to Clark on the play resulted in a Mississauga power play. A turnover in the defensive zone proved costly, as Amadio netted his second of the game while short-handed. Cameron Zanussi came on in relief of Martin, midway through the game. Cody Thompson dropped the mitts with Baird in an attempt to rev up his teammates. The Trout were still generating chances, but lady luck was not with them tonight as none of those chances translated into goals. Mississauga trailed 5-0 on the scoreboard, but did outshoot the Troops in the second period.
The physical side of the game began to take over in this one-sided affair. Mikey McLeod laid a big hit on North Bay's Zack Shankar, who was a little shaken. Shankar got up and immediately took a run at McLeod. Nick Zottl came to the defence of his teammate, but Shankar shied away from the fight. Zottl did find a sparring partner in Riley Bruce. Try as they might, the Steelheads could not get a bounce their way. Mississauga will need to shake off this loss as they continue their three-game set this weekend.
The Steelheads hit the road for tomorrow's game in Owen Sound, and are back at the Hershey Centre on Sunday for their annual Teddy Bear Toss game presented by Canadian Tire! Tickets for Sunday are still available. Come on out to cheer on the Trout and help us support the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program. Visit Ticketmaster to purchase tickets.
