Saginaw Spirit Knock off IceDogs

The Saginaw Spirit finished out their weekend road trip with high scoring 7-1 win against the Niagara IceDogs at the Meridian Centre.

The Saginaw Spirit opened up the scoring early at 5:52 with a highlight reel goal by Mitchell Stephens, Nick Moutrey assisted with the score. Both teams traded penalities but neither could capiltalize off of the one man advantage in the first. The Spirit went to the locker room leading the IceDogs 1-0. Shots on goal for the first period read in favor Saginaw 13, Niagara 7.

Fourty-eight seconds into the second frame Mitchell Stephens scores his second goal of the night. Chase Stewert and Nick Moutrey were credited with the assists. Stephens' goal extended the lead of the Spirit's to 2-0. Shortly after Billy Jenkins slid one behind Saginaw's starting goaltender David Ovsjannikov by a pass from Cody Payne at 10:49 for Niagara's first goal of the night. Spirit held the lead still 2-1. Penalties were traded before Michael Holmes and David Ovsjannikov assisted Dylan Sadowy in a late goal at 18:54 of the 2nd to take the Spirit's lead to 3-1. Niagara was called for two penalites 4 seconds before the end of the middle frame so the Spirit headed into the final 20 minutes with a two man advantage. Shots on goal for the second period favored Saginaw once again with 13 and Niagara 11.

The third saw three power play goals with in the first 2 minutes. Saginaw capitalized off of the five-on-three advantage at the start of the 3rd with Mitchell Stephens completing the hat trick just 1:27 into the third period which placed the Spirit's lead to 4-1. Niagara had an interference penalty, which kept the power play running for Saginaw. Nick Moutrey added the second power play goal of the period putting the 5th point on the board with an assist from Dylan Sadowy at the 1:41 mark. Mitchell Stephens kept that momentum for the Spirit going as he shot his fourth goal of the night on the power play at 3:20 adding to Saginaw's lead making it 6-1. Asissts went to Dylan Sadowy and Marcus Crawford. To ice the game Connor Brown put a goal in at 14:48 pushing the Spirit's lead to 7-1 over Niagara. Tye Felhaber and Artem Artemov had the assists. This game marked tonights starting goaltender for the Spirit, David Ovsjannikov, as his first OHL win. Final shots on goal favored Saginaw 38-25.

The Saginaw Spirit will travel next weekend to The Windsor Family Credit Union Centre to take on the Windsor Spitfires Thursday December 18 th at 7:05 p.m. Saginaw will then travel on Friday to Sarnia to face the Sting with a puck dropping at 7:05p.m. Finishing out the weekend the Spirit on Saturday December 20th will host the Windsor Spitfires at the Dow Event Center with a game time of 7:11 p.m.
