Erie Otters News Release

Erie, Pennsylvania - Erie fell to Oshawa 5-1 Saturday night and the Generals swept the season series. Alex DeBrincat had the Otters lone goal on the power play in the second period.

The Otters might have had more power play opportunities in the first, but the Generals ruled the scoreboard. Hunter Smith and Stephen Desrocher both found the back of the net to give Oshawa a two-goal lead for the period. Erie had several great chances, but the Generals' blocking was on top of things, jumping in front of the puck over and over. Patrick Fellows put a shot on the net that pinged off the post, fooling nearly the entire arena.

Penalties made the difference in the second period with both Oshawa and Erie picking up a tally on the man-advantage. Bradley Latour started the scoring at 5:05, but DeBrincat finished it at 11:01 with his 12th power play goal of the season from Kyle Pettit and Kurtis MacDermid.

Tempers started to flare after a roughing call on Stephen Desrocher. Aidan Wallace and Trent Fox dropped the gloves next to the Generals net, with Fox coming out on top. Daniel Dekoning made a few big saves on Oshawa, keeping the score at 3-1.

Fellows had other nice chances starting the third, but Appleby continued to turn the puck away time after time. MacDermid was the next Otter with a chance to beat Appleby, but the Generals netminder continued to keep Erie off the board. With Strome in the box, Mitchell Vande Somple put the puck under the bar and gave the Generals a 4-1 lead. Erie went to the power play and pulled Dekoning for a 6-on-4 with just under three minutes to go. But before the Otters could score, Vande Somple tapped the puck into the empty net to make it 5-1.

DeBrincat continues to dominate rookie scoring, leading in power play goals and overall scoring with 48 points and 26 goals, more than double the second place rookies in those categories.

The Otters take a break until next Friday when the welcome Niagara on Friday and travel to Guelph Saturday before the Christmas break.
