Wolves Defeat Kingston 3-1
December 13, 2014 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Sudbury Wolves News Release
The Sudbury Wolves welcomed the Kingston Frontenacs to the Sudbury Arena Saturday evening for their second game in as many nights and were looking to build on Friday's win over Windsor.
Saturday's game was very community driven. The Wolves hosted their annual Teddy Bear Toss night sponsored by the Travelodge. The Wolves also dedicated the game in memory of Liam Kirkwood who passed in 2012 at the age of 18 from cancer. The theme of this game was to help bring awareness to "Children with Cancer" and assist in providing financial support to the Childrens Wish Foundation. A special pre-game ceremony was held prior to the start of Saturday's game with the Kingston Frontenacs. Both the Wolves and Frontenacs wore #22 helmet decals in memory of the Sudbury-born Liam Kirkwood, who was selected by the Kingston Frontenacs in 2010 Priority Selection.
The first period got off to a slow start as both teams were evenly matched in the neutral zone. Kingston's ROBERT POLESELLO got into penalty trouble during the first period and was sent to the box twice. The second period saw much more action as both teams came out flying. The Frontenacs got on the board first as POLESELLO put one past Wolves' netminder TROY TIMPANO. MATT SCHMALZ tied things up for the Wolves when he fired one past LUCAS PERESSINI to even out the score. The Wolves controlled much of the second period and outshot Kingston 24-16 after the first two frames.
The Wolves continued their hard work throughout the third period, frustrating the Frontenacs. SCHMALZ scored his second goal of the game and 16th on the season on the power play to give the Wolves a 2-1 lead with less than 3 minutes to play. With 31 seconds remaining in the game, NATHAN PANCEL rolled one into the empty net to seal the victory for the Wolves, who took this one by a final score of 3-1. The Wolves outshot their opponent for the second straight night, outshooting the Frontenacs 32-28. TIMPANO had a hot weekend in net, allowing only one goal over two games and was named first star on both occasions.
The Sudbury Wolves would like to thank all the fans who donated stuffed animals for the Teddy Bear Toss, which helped collect 1,145 stuffed animals for local children in need as well as all those who donated to the Children's Wish Foundation on behalf of Liam Kirkwood.
The Sudbury Wolves will look to extend their winning streak next Friday, December 19th when their division rivals, the Barrie Colts visit the Nickel City at 7:30PM. To purchase tickets visit www.greatersudbury.ca, call 705-671-3000 or visit the Sudbury Arena Box Office.
