Brampton Steelheads News Release
Owen Sound, ON - Coming off a tough 5-0 loss to the North Bay Battalion yesterday, the Steelheads visited the Owen Sound Attack Saturday night looking to get back in the win column. The Attack were also coming off a Friday night loss as they were topped 4-3 in a shootout by the Guelph Storm. Jack Flinn and Spencer Martin would get the opportunity to bounce back as they both got the start in their respective nets for the second night in a row. The Steelheads were still without two of their top scorers, Jimmy Lodge and Sam Babintsev, and the Attack were without their top defenceman, Chris Bigras who is at the Team Canada selection camp for the upcoming World Junior Championship.
The Attack almost had an early advantage as Lucas Venuto took a penalty 41 seconds into the game, but Szypula followed him to the box a few seconds later after a high-sticking call. After some 4-on-4 play, the Attack had a good chance, testing Spencer Martin on a 2-on-1, but Daniel Milne shot the puck wide. Mississauga would respond with some great pressure, allowing Josh Burnside to bury his 9th of the season and open the scoring. Lucas Venuto drew the lone assist on Burnside's goal. Owen Sound answered back shortly after as Ryan Heeps potted his first of the season to tie the game. After Stefan LeBlanc made a great defensive play to force him wide, Nastasiuk had a good chance to give Owen Sound the lead, but rang his shot off the post. It would be Palmu who would take advantage of a screened Spencer Martin to give the Attack their first lead of the game with just under 2 minutes to go in the period. Mississauga kept the pressure on with time winding down in the period, and it paid off as Bastian buried the rebound off a shot from Clark with only 3 seconds left on the clock. Day drew the other assist that tied Mississauga and Owen Sound at 2 heading into the first intermission.
Despite the late game-tying goal by the Trout in the first, it was Owen Sound that came out flying in the second. Spencer Martin was tested early and often, but was up for the challenge. Jacob Busch had two great chances for Owen Sound, his first stopped by Martin's glove hand, the second by the crossbar. Keeping up the pressure, Nastasiuk would solve Martin off a pass from Milne to put Owen Sound up 3-2. Mississauga would have an opportunity to tie things up again as Centorame took a boarding penalty that would see the Steelheads go on the man-advantage. Not long after that penalty expired, Centorame and Donnelly both went to the box after some pushing and shoving, resulting in some more 4-on-4 action. MacArthur would join Centorame in the box after a holding call, giving the Steelheads another power play opportunity. Capitalizing on the 4-on-3, Cianfrone fed Devlin who sent a beautiful cross-ice pass to Burnside who netted his 2nd of the game. The Steelheads and Attack would once again head into the intermission all tied up.
McLeod had the best chance for the Steelheads early in the third, as he tried to bury the rebound off a shot from MacIntyre. Jacob Friend gave the Steelheads their fourth power play opportunity of the game but the Trout were unable to capitalize. Kyle Platzer had a good shorthanded chance but Martin stood tall to keep the game tied. Owen Sound would head to overtime for the second night in a row, as the game remained tied at 3 at the end of regulation.
The additional 5 minutes did not yield a winner so a shootout would be necessary. With a goal on the night, Petrus Palmu would be up first for Owen Sound, but he lost the puck on his attempt. Mikey McLeod would have his first shootout opportunity as the Steelheads first shooter. Despite a nifty move, McLeod was stopped by Flinn. Kyle Plazter was up next for Owen Sound, but was stopped by Martin. Lucas Venuto was up second for the Steelheads but he was also stopped b - y Flinn. This trend would continue for the next 3 shooters before Everett Clark found the back of the net to win it for the Steelheads 4-3.
The Steelheads close out the weekend at home tomorrow when they host the Barrie Colts for their annual Teddy Bear Toss presented by Canadian Tire at 2:00 pm at the Hershey Centre. Great tickets are still available online through Ticketmaster and at the Hershey Centre box office.
