Louisville Bats News Release
PAPILLION, NE - A home run by Elly De La Cruz and a double by Jhonny Pereda led a late Louisville Bats (13-19) rally to take the series finale 4-3 over the Omaha Storm Chasers (12-19) on Sunday afternoon at Werner Park.
After three scoreless innings, Omaha put the first run on the board with a homer to give the Storm Chasers a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Omaha followed in the fifth with a second long ball, a two-run shot to extend its lead to 3-0.
Bats starter Andrew Abbott (1-0, 3.00) turned in another solid start in just his third Triple-A outing. Abbott tossed 5.0 strong innings, allowing three runs on six hits with a single walk while striking out nine.
In the bottom of the seventh, following a two-out walk to Will Benson, Elly De La Cruz smashed a home run to left field, scoring two for the Bats and slashing Omaha's lead down to one at 3-2. With De La Cruz's third long ball of the season, the Bats have recorded a homer in each of the last six games.
Louisville took the lead in the top of the eighth, driving in two more runs. Christian Encarnacion-Strand started the inning with a lead-off single, his second hit of the game. Jason Vosler followed with a walk before Nick Martini grounded out on hard hit ball knocked down by the pitcher to move both runners into scoring position. With two outs in the inning, Jhonny Pereda stepped to the plate and laced a double down the right field line, scoring two runs for the Bats, putting Louisville ahead 4-3.
Alan Busenitz came on in the ninth, sitting the Storm Chasers down in order to secure the 4-3 win for Louisville. With the win, the Bats also secured their first road series win of the season and closed the 12-game road trip with a 6-6 record.
The Bats will return home and enjoy a day off on Monday, May 8 before starting a two week on Tuesday, May 9 with the first of six games against the Columbus Clippers. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 6:05 pm E.T. at Louisville Slugger Field.
