Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

SALISBURY, MD-Antonio Bastardo had never pitched above the Gulf Coast League before this season, but he seems to be adjusting just fine to the South Atlantic League. The lefty threw six shutout innings while striking out nine as Lakewood opened a two-game series with a 2-1 win at Delmarva.

Bastardo (3-0) has now thrown 20 consecutive shutout innings and allowed just two runs in his first 25 with the BlueClaws.

Meanwhile, he is part of a BlueClaws (6-1) staff that has allowed just 14 runs in their last nine games, and a starting rotation that has allowed just eight runs in their last 51.2 innings.

Bastardo got Lakewood through six and pitched with a lead for most of the night, as both Lakewood runs came as part of a three-hit 2nd inning. Quintin Berry's triple scored Doug Morales, and Fidel Hernandez's ground-out scored Berry.

Zach Sterner, who in his first BlueClaws outing opened with a perfect 7th, walked the first two in the 8th, forcing Steve Roadcap to bring on closer RJ Swindle. The southpaw got help from Tuffy Gosewisch to get the first out, as Lakewood's catcher, who has thrown out more base-stealers than anyone else in the league, picked off Todd Davison at 2nd after Swindle's first pitch.

Swindle then struck out lefty Brandon Tripp, but Chris Vinyard dunked in a single to right-center, putting the tying run on base for Billy Rowell, last year's #9 pick overall.

Rowell had faced Swindle three times previously, and struck out all three. But before the at-bat, there was more action not related to the pitcher-batter match-up. Swindle picked Chris Vinyard off first, but he went to 2nd and on the play, Danny Figueroa stole home, making it 2-1.

Finally, Swindle struck out Rowell for the fourth time this year, ending the frame. He went the 9th for his seventh save.

Kyle Schmidt (3-4) went eight effective innings for Delmarva (2-5) while allowing two runs on six hits but suffered the loss.

The BlueClaws have won 9 out of 10 dating back to the final three of the first half and have played 12 straight games (9-3) decided by two runs or less. 17 of their 24 meetings with Delmarva have been two or one-run contests.

Both Berry and Adrian Cardenas went 2-4.

Friday night's game begins at 7:05. Lakewood sends RHP Carlos Monasterios (7-5, 5.29) to the mound against RHP Brad Bergesen (7-3, 2.40). You can hear the game on the Shore Sports Network (1160 WOBM- AM and 1310 WADB) beginning at 6:50.
