Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release

Fort Wayne, IN - Entering Saturday's game against Dayton, the Fort Wayne TinCaps needed an efficient starting performance from RHP Anthony Bass to save an overworked bullpen. Bass gave Fort Wayne just that, firing six strong innings to power the TinCaps to a 7-2 victory over the Dragons at Parkview Field. Meanwhile, the offense pounded out ten hits as the TinCaps ran their winning streak to eight games.

With the win, the TinCaps cut their magic number to two. Any combination of Fort Wayne wins or Great Lakes losses totaling two or more would give Fort Wayne its first playoff berth since 2006.

The Dragons jumped on top in the 1st inning when Cody Puckett ripped an RBI single to make it 1-0.

The TinCaps responded in the bottom of the 2nd . James Darnell bounced a leadoff single to center and Sawyer Carroll followed with an RBI double to the gap in right-center to tie the game. After Allan Dykstra was hit by a pitch, Kevin Hansen dropped a sacrifice bunt. Robert Lara followed with an RBI single to center and Dean Anna's run-scoring fielder's choice gave Fort Wayne a 3-1 advantage.

Dayton plated a run in the top of the 5th when Andrew Means punched an RBI double to left-center, cutting the lead to 3-2.

Fort Wayne blew it open in the bottom of the 5th . Daniel Robertson pounded a solo homer to left field to make it 4-2. Later in the inning, Dykstra drilled a two-out, two-run single up the middle to extend the margin to 6-2. That chased Dayton LHP Matt Fairel, who entered the game with the second-best ERA in the Midwest League, from the game.

The TinCaps tacked on an insurance run in the 8th . Dykstra drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on Lara's single and scored on Anna's sacrifice fly, ending the scoring at 7-2.

Bass (5-3) picked up the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk in six innings while striking out six. Fairel (4-3) took the loss as he allowed a season-high six runs in 4.2 innings.

The TinCaps improved to 40-22 and are now 11-0 against the Dragons. The 40 wins in the first half is the second-highest total in team history; Fort Wayne went 41-31 in the first half in 1998. Dayton fell to 24-38.

The TinCaps hit the road for a Sunday matinee against the West Michigan Whitecaps (Class-A Detroit Tigers). It is the first of a four-game series against the Whitecaps. Fort Wayne RHP Simon Castro (3-4) is scheduled to start against West Michigan LHP Casey Crosby (4-1, 3.55 ERA).
