Kernels can't take advantage of errors - fall to River Bandits, 5-4

June 12, 2009 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels couldn't take advantage of eight River Bandit errors and dropped their second game in a row to Quad Cities, 5-4, at Modern Woodman Park in Davenport on Friday night. The River Bandits scored two runs in the eighth inning off Kernel relievers Andrew Taylor and Vladimir Veras (3-2) and Dave Carpenter retired the Kernels in order in the ninth for his fourth save.

The loss tightens up the race for the two playoff spots in the MWL West as Kane County defeated Wisconsin to move two games ahead of the Kernels in first place, and third place Clinton beat Peoria to move to one game behind the Kernels for the wild card spot.

Kernels starter Tyler Chatwood allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits, walking four and striking out three over 4.2 innings in a no-decision effort. Anel De Los Santos went 3 for 4 and Tyson Auer was 2 for 5 with a stolen base and three runs scored. Roberto Lopez was 1 for 5 with an RBI single and Darwin Perez added an RBI.

River Bandit starter Adam Veras allowed three runs on five hits over five innings, but didn't figure in the final decision. Reliever Scott McGregor (3-3) picked up the win as Charlie Cutler went 3 for 5 with a triple and RBI and Alex Castellanos went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI.
