South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Comstock Park, MI - A promising night fell apart in the bottom of the eighth inning as the South Bend Silver Hawks allowed five runs on six hits in the inning and fell to West Michigan 6-4 on Saturday night. With the win, the Whitecaps took three out of four games in the series and won six of the seven matchups with South Bend in the first half.
South Bend starter Brett Moorhouse (LP, 2-7) had allowed just one run over seven innings, including throwing six 1-2-3 innings. Unfortunately for Moorhouse, the bottom dropped out in the eighth. Trailing 4-1 and with two outs and a runner at first, the Whitecaps picked up three straight hits against Moorhouse, the last being a three run homer by Brent Wyatt for the 5-4 lead. Yonata Ortega (ND) replaced Moorhouse and allowed another run, putting the margin at 6-4.
South Bend scored three times in the top of the second inning to take an early lead against Whitecaps starter Brandon Hamilton (ND). Nelson Gomez started the rally with a walk and went to third on a single by Rossmel Perez. Chris Davis picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice, scoring Gomez for the 1-0 lead. Davis stole second and moved to third on a single by Victor Estevez. After a wild pitch moved Estevez to second, Brendan Duffy brought both runners home with a double to left for the 3-0 lead.
The Silver Hawks added another run in the second with Alberto Diaz walking and stealing second base against Hamilton. Gomez drove him in with a double to deep left-center to put South Bend up four.
After starting the game with four perfect innings, Moorhouse was finally scored upon in the fifth. A walk and two singles loaded the bases with nobody out, and Jordan Lennerton drove in a run with a fielder's choice. Moorhouse then got helped out with a line drive double play to end the inning and keep South Bend up by a 4-1 margin
Brayan Villarreal (ND) came in for West Michigan to retire nine straight batters from the fifth through the seventh and Erik Crichton (WP, 2-0) held South Bend in check in the eighth.
Jared Gayhart (SV, 3) allowed a leadoff single to Reynaldo Navarro in the ninth, but then got two strikeouts and a groundout to end the game.
The Silver Hawks return home for a Sunday matinee against the Great Lakes Loons with tomorrow's first pitch scheduled for 2:00 PM. RHP Ryan Cook (5-3, 3.67 ERA) will be in the starting role for South Bend, with Great Lakes sending RHP Ethan Martin (3-3, 4.44 ERA) to the bump. Pregame coverage begins at 1:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
