COMSTOCK PARK, MI - A three-run homerun to right by Brent Wyatt put the West Michigan Whitecaps ahead, 5-4, in the eighth inning as they beat the South Bend Silver Hawks, 6-4, Saturday night. The ‘Caps win the series three games-to-one, and they keep the pressure on division-leading Fort Wayne.

South Bend dominated play for the vast majority of the game. Starting pitcher Brett Morehouse was perfect through four innings, and only allowed 1 ‘Cap run through seven.

But in the eighth the Whitecaps struck for 5 runs on 6 hits, including Wyatt's homer, and took the lead for the first time.

The Silver Hawks pushed three runs across in the second inning as Brendan Duffy delivered a two-out, two-run double. South Bend added a run against ‘Caps' starter Brandon Hamilton when Nelson Gomez drove home Alberto Diaz.

West Michigan didn't get its first base runner of the game until the fifth. The Whitecaps got a lead-off walk from Ronnie Bourquin followed by a singles from Bryan Pounds and Billy Nowlin to load the bases. Jordan Lennerton's fielders' choice RBI made the score, 4-1 South Bend.

It would stay that way until the eighth. The Whitecaps put three runners on base with two outs for Brent Wyatt. He drilled his second homerun of the year, and the ‘Caps had the lead, 5-4. Ronnie Bourquin added a run to the lead with an RBI double.

West Michigan got great relief work from Bryan Villareal, Erik Crichton and Jared Gayhart. Villareal worked three scoreless innings; Crichton picked up his second win of the year, and Gayhart was credited with his third save.

The Whitecaps will open up a crucial four-game series with the Fort Wayne Tincaps on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. LHP Casey Crosby throws for the ‘Caps and RHP Rimon Castro goes for Fort Wayne.
