Kane County Cougars News Release
APPLETON, Wisc. - During their four-game series against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, the Kane County Cougars scored first three times and lost each of those games. Saturday night they took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning but ultimately fell, 3-1, in front of 4,363 at Time Warner Cable Field. The Cougars' lead over Cedar Rapids for first place in the Western Division is down to one game with eight left in the first half, and the two clubs start a four-game series against each other Sunday night in Iowa.
Jason Christian belted a solo homer in the top of the fifth off Trey Watten to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead, but it did not last long. In the bottom of the inning, starter Kenny Smalley committed an error on a pickoff attempt, and a miscue by first baseman Steve Kleen on the same play allowed the Wisconsin runner to score to make it 1-1. Then in the seventh Smalley (6-2) yielded his final run on a triple and a sacrifice fly. He gave up just three hits over seven strong innings, posting a third straight quality start but suffering his first loss since April 14.
Jason Ray took over for Smalley in the eighth and served up one run, which led to the 3-1 final. The Cougars had eight hits but stranded nine runners. They did not score a single run past the fifth inning during the entire four-game series. Brandon Ritchie (4-0) picked up the relief win for the Rattlers (30-32), and Jim Henderson recorded his 15th save.
The Cougars (37-25) start their set in Cedar Rapids on Sunday night at 5:05 CDT. Matt Fitts (1-5, 5.48) is scheduled to face Ryan Chaffee (6-1, 2.98) of the Kernels (36-26).
