Bass Gobbles Up Buffalo Lineup

September 2, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release

Brian Bass struck out a career high 11 batters over nine shutout innings and Doug Deeds powered the Red Wings' offense with a pair of home runs as the Wings defeated the Buffalo Bisons 3-0 on Fan Appreciation Night.

Bass looked sharp in the first, but hit a speed bump in the second. After a solid single by Andy Marte, a broken bat single and an infield single loaded the bases with two men out. However, a weak ground ball to the first basemen kept the game scoreless for the Wings.

The game was not scoreless for long though, as the cleanup hitter, Deeds, belted the first pitch he saw from Buffalo starter Jeff Harris deep to right for a home run to lead off the bottom of the second. Deeds was not finished however, when he came to bat in the fourth, he smashed his second home run to right that sailed past the light post and into the night. The blast was a solo home run, but extended the lead to 2-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, Harris was removed in favor of the lefty Rich Rundles, who came in to face Deeds. Deeds was walked on four pitches, including one that was thrown behind his knees. Darnell McDonald's double and Deeds's walk put a man in scoring position, but two strikeouts and a hard hit line out right to the second baseman by Jose Morales ending the inning.

Bass was on his game and would not need more run support than Deeds could provide. Bass did not allow a hit to Buffalo from the second inning onward, until allowing a lone double in the ninth. Overall, Bass allowed only five hits and one walk over his nine innings of work.

The only other inning in which the Red Wings scored was the eighth. Gil Velazquez had a one out single and was promptly doubled in by McDonald. After McDonald, Deeds was intentionally walked giving him both two walks and two home runs on the eventful night
