Long Balls Helps Bats Defeat Indians, 3-0

LOUISVILLE, KY-Right fielder Chris Dickerson and second basemen Aaron Herr each homered for the Bats Sunday night in a 3-0 victory over the Indianapolis. A crowd of 12,119 saw the Bats win their third straight against the Indians and with the win, the Bats clinched second place in the International League West Division standings.

Joey Votto got the offense started, reaching base on a fielding error by Indians shortstop Brian Bixler and advancing to second on Herr's groundout. Anderson Machado's single to right field scored Votto from second for the Bats' first run of the game. Dickerson put the second Louisville run on the board with a solo home run over the right field wall in the bottom of the fifth inning. Herr then followed with a 405-foot shot of his own over the centerfield wall in the fifth inning and ended his night with a 2-for-4 performance. Machado and newly acquired center fielder Buck Coats also contributed two hits apiece.

Louisville starter Matt Maloney (2-1, 3.18) pitched six strong innings of shutout baseball, allowing three hits while striking out five. With the win, Maloney earns his second win in four starts for the Bats. Kirk Saarloos pitched two innings of relief, striking out one. Ricky Stone secured his 16th save of the season.

Indianapolis starter John Van Benschoten (10-7, 2.56) picked up the loss, going six innings while surrendering three runs on nine hits and walking three.

The Indians were led in hitting by third basemen Neil Walker, who went 2-for-3 with a double on the night.

The Bats wrap up the 2007 season with their final game against Indianapolis tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. RHP Elizardo Ramirez (3-3, 3.75) for Louisville and RHP Marty McLeary (5-7, 4.36) for Indianapolis are the probable starters.
