Louisville Rolls To 3-0 Win Over Indianapolis
September 2, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Left-hander Matt Maloney fired six scoreless innings, while right fielder Chris Dickerson and second baseman Aaron Herr clobbered solo home runs in a two-run bottom of the fifth as Louisville rolled to a 3-0 blanking of Indianapolis in front of 12,119 Sunday evening at Louisville Slugger Field.
The Bats improve to 73-70 overall and 38-33 at home, while the Indians fall to 70-72 on the season and 31-39 on the road. Louisville clinches second place in the International League's West Division with the win, while the Tribe is handed its first sub-.500 season since 2004.
Dickerson opened the fifth with his 12th dinger of the season over the right-field wall. Herr followed moments later with his 19th roundtripper of the campaign over the marker in right center.
The long balls came after Louisville cracked the scoreboard with an unearned run in the fourth. 1B Joey Votto reached on a fielding error, advanced to second on Herr's infield single and eventually scored on LF Anderson Machado's base knock to right.
Maloney (6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 SO), RHP Kirk Saarloos (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 SO) and RHP Ricky Stone (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 SO) combined on the Bats' eighth shutout of 2007.
Maloney improved to 2-1 with the win in his third Triple-A start, while Saarloos was credited with his second hold and Stone notched his team-leading 16th save.
Herr (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI), Machado (2-for-4, 1 RBI) and CF Buck Coats (2-for-4) registered multi-hit efforts for Louisville, while 3B Neil Walker (2-for-3) was the only Indianapolis hitter to record more than one base knock.
The Indians put at least one runner on base in seven of nine innings, but three double plays and three caught stealings ended the potential of any rallies.
Tribe RHP John Van Benschoten (6.0 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO) was pinned with the loss, falling to 10-7.
Indianapolis and Louisville wrap up the 2007 season on Monday at 1:05 p.m. RHP Marty McLeary is scheduled to start for the Indians, while RHP Elizardo Ramirez is expected to get the nod for the Bats.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 12:45 p.m.
