Bruce, Shearn Win Bats Monthly Awards

Louisville, KY - Outfielder Jay Bruce and RHP Tom Shearn have been named Hitter and Pitcher of the Month for August for the Louisville Bats.

During the month of August, Bruce batted .316 (37-117) with nine doubles, seven home runs, 15 RBI and 16 runs scored. Bruce began the season with the Single-A Sarasota Reds, played in 16 games with Double-A Chattanooga and was promoted to the Bats July 12.

Bruce, 20, is batting .310 in 49 games with the Bats this season, his first year in Triple-A and third in professional baseball. Combined on the season, he leads the entire Minor Leagues with 80 extra-base hits, is tied for fourth with 46 doubles and is tied for sixth with 166 hits. Bruce leads all Reds Minor Leaguers with 26 home runs and is second with a .320 batting average and 89 RBI.

The Texas native was named to the U.S. Team for the 2007 All-Star Futures Game and in their midseason rankings, was named Midseason Player of the Year in all of the Minor Leagues by Baseball America.

Shearn went 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA in four starts for the Bats during the month of August. On the season, Shearn is 7-10 with a 4.20 ERA in 26 games (24 starts). His 24 starts, 109 strikeouts and 143.2 innings pitched lead the team.

The 30-year-old had his contract purchased by the Reds August 26 and made his Major League debut that night. Shearn allowed three runs on four hits in seven innings to earn his first ML win after 11 years in the Minors.
