Montgomery Biscuits News Release

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Biscuits' (39-37) lost the series finale to the Birmingham Barons (36-38), 5-3, Tuesday at Riverwalk Stadium. Birmingham starting pitcher Matt Tomshaw (3-4) picked up his second consecutive victory, both coming against the Biscuits this series.

Similar to last night, Montgomery had early success. Peter Maris led off the bottom of the first with a home run, his fourth with the Biscuits and ninth of the season, including his time with High-A Charlotte.

The Barons responded in the second frame. Despite Montgomery opener Curtis Taylor retiring the first two batters, he issued a walk to Bryant Flete to extend the inning. As Sam McWilliams (2-4) warmed in the bullpen, Biscuits' manager Brady Williams opted to remove Taylor.

After Matt Rose welcomed McWilliams with a single, Birmingham scored its first run without putting a ball in play, thanks to a wild pitch which scored Flete from third base. While Montgomery's right-hander searched for the strike zone, Alex Call drew a walk before Alfredo Gonzalez plated a run on an RBI-single.

Trailing 2-1, the Biscuits continued the back-and-forth scoring fest. Brett Sullivan led off the frame with a single, scampering to second on a sacrifice bunt from Nathan Lukes. Dalton Kelly, who persists to be a thorn in Birmingham's side this season, swiftly scored the designated hitter on a single for his sixth RBI of the series.

In the fifth, Flete doubled with a runner in scoring position, supplying Birmingham a 3-2 advantage. The Biscuits, in a trend of the evening, propelled the third tie as Mike Brosseau homered for the fifth time in 2018.

However, there would not be another knotted score as Alex Call lined a McWilliams offering for a home run to thrust the Barons in front. Following a Luis Alexander Basabe two-out single, Zack Collins widened the gash, doubling home the speedy outfielder and chasing the Biscuits' reliever.

Although Matt Krook ended the threat, inducing a fly out of Trey Michalczewski, Montgomery's bats stalled as Thomshaw retired the Biscuits' in order before handing it off to Birmingham's bullpen.

A combination of Brandon Brennan and Colton Turner kept the Biscuits' bats at bay. The duo retired nine-of-ten batters, only allowing a Kelly walk in the seventh.

The Biscuits begin a six-game road-trip Thursday at 6:05 p.m. as they take on the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Montgomery will start J.D. Martin (4-9) while the Jumbo Shrimp are scheduled to offer Jeff Brigham (3-0).

Montgomery returns to Riverwalk Stadium on Wednesday, July 4, as the Biscuits welcome the Pensacola Blue Wahoos for a four-game set. The series kicks off with an Independence Day Celebration, featuring MAX Fireworks.
