Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves (32-44) were defeated by the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (31-43) 4-2 in the series finale at Trustmark Park on Tuesday night. M-Braves starter, Kyle Wright had a record night as he struck out 13 Jumbo Shrimp batters, a career high for the Atlanta Braves No. 3 overall prospect. In 5.2 IP, Wright allowed 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 HR and issued 3 BB in addition to his 13 K's.
Much like the previous night, the Jumbo Shrimp bats did not take long to heat up as they produced three runs in the top of the first inning. Monte Harrison, the top prospect in the Miami Marlins organization, continued his hot streak at the plate by lining a sharp RBI triple to right field, scoring Brian Miller. Both Harrison and Isan Diaz would take advantage of two wild pitches by M-Braves starter, Kyle Wright later in the inning and score, making the score 3-0 in favor of the Jumbo Shrimp.
The M-Braves responded in the bottom of the second inning when Luis Valenzuela and Wright each manufactured RBI singles, narrowing the scoring deficit to one run.
In the top of the fourth inning, Eric Jagielo homered on a fly ball to right field, providing the Jumbo Shrimp with a 4-2 lead.
Luis Marte tied the game 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning after he hammered a two-run home run over the left field wall, the first of his M-Braves career.
Jacksonville added two insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning via a two-run double by Dunand. Isan Diaz and Peter O'Brien both scored on the double by Dunand, giving the Jumbo Shrimp a 6-4 lead.
Mississippi made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth inning after Valenzuela collected his second RBI of the game by singling on a line drive to center field, allowing Travis Demeritte to score making the score 6-5.
Kolton Mahoney (4-3, 3.33) earned the win for the Jumbo Shrimp and Adam McCreery (2-5, 4.28) suffered the loss for the M-Braves. Jacksonville reliever, Kyle Keller was credited with a save, his second of the 2018 season.
After tying the six-game series 3-3 with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the Mississippi Braves will take advantage of a league off day tomorrow and travel to Pensacola, FL for a six-game series against their South Division rival, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. RHP Bryse Wilson (1-5, 5.83) will start Thursday night's series opener in Pensacola. Pensacola's Thursday night starter is still to be determined.
The M-Braves will return to Trustmark Park on Wednesday, July 4 when they begin a four-game series against the Biloxi Shuckers. The July 4 contest will feature a Super-sized Independence Day Fireworks Show presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi & WAPT-TV.
