Barons Edge out Suns 13-11 in Thursday's Shootout

JACKSONVILLE, FL - After surrendering an early five-run lead and eventually climbing back to tie the game with a four-run ninth inning, the Jacksonville Suns (0-1, 36-35) fell to the Birmingham Barons (1-0, 30-41) by a 13-11 final in 10 innings in Thursday night's offensive showdown from Bragan Field.

David Cales (W, 1-0; BS, 2) blew the save but wound up with the win after just one hit in his 1.2 innings of work, with no runs being charged to his credit.

Chipper Smith did not factor into the decision after allowing five runs (all earned) on four hits in three-plus innings of work, walking two batters and striking out three Barons.

James Nygren allowed three unearned runs on three hits in his two innings of relief, finishing with a walk and a pair of strikeouts.

Collin Cargill looked sharp in his relief outing, holding the Barons to a pair of hits while issuing a walk and tallying two strikeouts in 2.2 innings of action.

Frankie Reed surrendered three runs (all earned) on four hits in his 1.1 innings of work, finishing with a two strikeouts in his Thursday night outing.

Jheyson Manzueta (L, 3-1) took the loss after allowed two runs in the top of the 10th after allowing a hit and a walk in addition to hitting two batters.

After mustering up one hit through the first two innings, the Suns batted around in the bottom of the third, pulverizing Nick McCully for five runs on five hits in the frame. The Suns used three consecutive hits to start the inning and grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Isaac Galloway came home to score on Austin Nola's RBI single. Two batters later, Southern League All-Star Brady Shoemaker brought in Brent Keys and Austin Nola on a two-run double that was grooved into the left-center gap, extending Jacksonville's lead to 3-0. Alfredo Silverio capped off the scoring in the inning with a two-run single into left field to give the Suns a 5-0 lead after three innings of play.

The Barons responded in a major way in the top of the fourth inning, scoring eight times as they sent 12 men to the plate in the inning. Following Jared Mitchell's (HR, 1) leadoff homer and Trayce Thompson's RBI double, Kevan Smith (HR, 5) hit a game-tying three-run home run to bring the Suns and Barons level at 5-5. The Barons received a RBI double from Jaime Pedroza and back-to-back run-scoring singles from Jared Mitchell and Chris Curley to make it an 8-5 Barons lead after the top of the fourth inning came to a close.

The Suns drew one run closer to make it an 8-6 Barons lead in the bottom of the sixth, with a run coming home when Isaac Galloway was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Jacksonville cut it to a one-run ballgame in the bottom of the eighth when Brent Keys scored Danny Black on a sacrifice fly, making it an 8-7 advantage in favor of the Barons.

The Barons helped their cause with three critical insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning. The Barons got two of them on one swing off the bat in the top of the ninth inning, with Rangel Ravelo (HR, 5) powering a two-run homer to left to give the Barons a 10-7 lead. Three batters later, Josh Richmond ripped a RBI triple to left to extend Birmingham's lead to 11-7.

But the Suns were far from done. Alfredo Silverio laced an opposite field two-run double to cut Birmingham's lead to 11-9 and then tied it up on Danny Black's two-run single to make it an 11-11 ballgame.

In the 10th, Rangel Ravelo put the Barons ahead for good with a two-out, two-run double down the right field line, vaulting the Barons back in front 13-11.

Every Suns player in the starting lineup reached base at least once in Thursday's ballgame.

The Suns and Barons will be back at it on Friday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Suns will trot out right-hander Jay Rogers (2-2, 5.32) while the Barons will counter with a righty of their own in Chris Beck (3-6, 3.39).
