Jackson Generals News Release
PEARL, MISS. - Tyler Olson (3-3, 4.13) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning Thursday (31-39) but ultimately could not hold the Mississippi Braves (40-30) at bay as the Braves defeated the Generals in the second half opener 9-4 at Trustmark Park.
Jackson began the scoring early with a pair of runs in the second inning. Julio Morban (1x4, R) singled in his first at bat back with the Generals after being activated from the disabled list. Morban then scored on Patrick Kivlehan's (1x4, R, 2B, RBI) eighth double of the year and Kivlehan later scored on a single from Jack Marder (2x4, RBI) to make the score 2-0 Jackson.
One night after Clayton Kershaw's no-hitter in the Major Leagues, starter Tyler Olson took a no-hitter of his own into the fifth inning. Kyle Kubitza broke it up with a single to begin the fifth for Mississippi. After a strike out and a single, Olson relinquished the lead on a two-run double by Gustavo Nunez that scored Kubitza and Braeden Schlehuber.
Then Jose Peraza tripled to score Nunez and Peraza came home when Mycal Jones reached on an error. The score was 4-2 Braves and they never trailed again.
The Generals picked up another run in the top of the fifth when Ketel Marte (2x4, 2 R) scored on Dan Paolini's (0x3, RBI, BB) groundout to short stop to cut the lead to 4-3, but that's the closest Jackson would get to their South Division opponent.
Mississippi picked up two more runs in the seventh when Cedric Hunter doubled to score Peraza and Jones to make the score 6-3.
Marte scored his second run of the night on Jamal Austin's (1x4, RBI) second triple of the season to cut the lead to 6-4 and extended Austin's hitting streak to 15 games in his final at-bat of the night.
The Braves added three more runs in the eighth for the 9-4 final.
Olson took the no-hitter into the fifth, but took the loss for the Generals as Jason Hursh (6-4, 3.36) earned the victory for the Braves. Chasen Shreve came on in the eighth in relief and earned his second save of the season.
Kivlehan extended his on-base streak to 25 games with his second inning double. The hit moved the third basemen ahead of Kris Bryant of the Tennessee Smokies for the second longest on-base streak in the Southern League this season.
Jackson and Mississippi will match up again Friday as Generals starter Stephen Landazuri (3-2, 4.38) will be opposed by right hander Mitch Atkins (1-0, 2.25) from the Braves. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m. and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
