Birmingham Barons News Release
Birmingham, AL - If the first game is any indication, Barons fans should be in for an exciting second half of the 2014 season as the Barons defeated the Jacksonville Suns 13-11 in a back-and-forth 10-inning affair at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
The Suns looked to be well on their way to their first victory of the second half, scoring five runs in the third inning highlighted by a two-run double by Brady Shoemaker and a two-run single by Alfredo Silverio against starter Nick McCully to take 5-0 lead.
However, the Barons responded with their biggest inning of the season, scoring eightruns on seven hits, chasing starter Chipper Smith from the game. Jared Mitchell started the scoring with a solo home run. Trayce Thompson followed a batterlater with an RBI double and scored on a three-run home run by Kevan Smith which tied the game at 5-5. Reliever James Nygren came on and surrendered three additional runs including RBI hits to Jamie Pedroza, Mitchell and Chris Curley as the Barons established an 8-5 lead.
Jacksonville chipped away at the lead with single runs in the sixth and eighth innings but Rangel Ravelo's two-run home run and Josh Richmond's RBI triple in the ninth looked to give the Barons a comfortable 11-7 lead.
Closer Cody Winiarski was brought in to slam the door in the bottom of the bottom of the ninth but loaded the bases on three consecutive singles to J.T. Realmuto, Brady Shoemaker and Austin Barnes. Alfredo Silverio followed with a two-run double, cutting the lead to 11-9 and chasing Winiarski from the game.
David Cales (1-0, 3.52) replaced Winiarski and promptly allowed a two-run single to Danny Black, tying the game at 11-11 and sending it to extra innings.
Undaunted, the Barons kept their resolve and struck right back in the top of the 10th. Rangel Ravelo came through in the clutch again, roping a two-out two-run double to right field, scoring Mitchell and Trayce Thompson to give the Barons a 13-11 lead they would not relinquish. Ravelo finished 2-for-4 with two runs score and four RBI while Mitchell and Thompson scored three runs apiece.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak and gave the Barons a 1-0 record in the second half and a 30-41 record overall. The loss dropped the Suns to 0-1 in the second half and 36-35 on the season. The Barons will look to make it two in a row tomorrow night as RHP Chris Beck (3-6, 3.39) takes the hill against RHP Jay Rogers (2-2, 5.32). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM CDT.
