Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - For the second time this series, the Birmingham Barons (42-45) offense struggled, this time producing just five hits in a 3-1 loss to the Mississippi Braves (38-51) on Tuesday night in front of 7,401 at Regions Field. The loss marks the 10th time the Barons have scored three or fewer runs in their last 11 games.
Turning Point: Down 2-1 late, the Barons put multiple runners on twice, but could never push across the tying run. In the sixth, they had runners on first and second with one out, but Zack Collins flew out and Trey Michalczewski struck out to strand the runners. The next inning, Matt Rose and Alex Call drew one-out walks and again the Barons didn't score as Keon Barnum flew out and Joel Booker struck out to end the inning.
Moments That Mattered: Leading off the fourth inning, Tyler Marlette got a pitch over the plate and hit it over the right-center field wall for a solo home run to put Mississippi in front 2-1. That would be the score until the ninth inning, when Travis Demeritte hit a solo homer of his own off Barons reliever Brandon Brennan to get the visitors an insurance run.
By The Numbers: Leading off the game for the Barons, Booker launched his second Double-A home run 365 feet into the left field stands, giving Birmingham a short-lived 1-0 lead. That would prove to be the Barons' only extra-base hit on the night, as Barnum was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double in the bottom of the fifth.
Facts And Figures: Bernardo Flores (L, 2-2) was strong again on the mound for Birmingham. Over 7.0 strong innings, he gave up just two runs on six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts for his fourth straight quality start. However, Marlette's home run in the fourth proved to be the decisive blow. Brennan struck out three over 2.0 relief innings, but the late home run from Demeritte put the game out of reach.
Up Next: The Barons and M-Braves conclude the four-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Dylan Cease (1-0, 3.24) is set to start for the Barons against the Mississippi's Enderson Franco (1-0, 3.24). Curt Bloom will have the call on 960 WERC News Radio and the iHeart Radio app.
