PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Los Angeles Angels announced Tuesday that second baseman Jahmai Jones will join the Mobile BayBears from Class A Advanced Inland Empire. Jones is the No. 3 Angels prospect, the No. 78 Major League prospect, and the No. 3 second-base prospect, according to MLB Pipeline.
Jones, 20, was selected by the Angels in the second round (No. 40 overall) of the 2015 MLB Draft as an outfielder out of Wesleyan High School in Norcross, Ga. He posted a .235 average, hit eight home runs, drove in 35 runs, and stole 13 bases in 75 games with Inland Empire this year. Jones, who transitioned to second base this offseason, was named a Mid-Season All-Star for the second time in his career. He has reached base in 18 consecutive games, with hits in 14 of his last 18 games since June 14.
In 306 Minor League games, Jones has a .270 average with 28 home runs and 76 stolen bases. He has been named a MiLB.com Angels Organization All-Star each of the past two seasons. Jones received his first invitation to Major League Spring Training this year, where he played in 10 games as an outfielder.
Jones was a two-sport star in high school, playing both baseball and football, and had a verbal commitment to the University of North Carolina. His late father, Andre, was a defensive end on the Notre Dame national championship football team in 1988 and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1991. His older brother, T.J., is a wide receiver for the Detroit Lions and also played at Notre Dame. His other brother, Malachi, also played in the National Football League and was the 2017 Offensive Rookie of the Year in the National Arena League.
The BayBears continue a four-game road series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. CDT.
