Mississippi Braves News Release
BIRMINGHAM, AL - Tyler Marlette and Travis Demeritte hit solo home runs to back another quality start from Bruce Zimmermann (W, 2-0), and the Mississippi Braves beat the Birmingham Barons, 3-1 on Tuesday night at Regions Field.
Birmingham's Joel Booker connected on Zimmermann's first pitch in the bottom of the first inning with a homer to put the Barons (10-9, 42-45) up 1-0, but the Braves controlled the game from that point forward.
The M-Braves (9-10, 38-51) answered the first-inning run with a run in the top of the second. Alay Lago hit the first of his two doubles down the left field line with one out. After a Demeritte groundout, Brandon Downes cracked a Bernardo Flores (L, 2-2) pitch off the wall in right-center for a triple that scored Lago to tie the game at one.
Marlette hadn't homered since June 22, but that changed with an opposite-field solo shot that landed over the Barons bullpen in right-center. Marlette finished runner-up in the Southern League Home Run Derby at Regions Field and also hit one in the All-Star Game. His eighth homer in the regular season placed Mississippi up 2-1,
Zimmermann did not allow a run after the first inning and turned in his eighth-straight 6.0 inning performance. The 23-year-old scattered five hits and just one run over 6.1 innings with three walks and six strikeouts. Zimmermann finishes the night in third place in all of Minor League Baseball with 119 strikeouts. The quality start was Mississippi's 18th in the last 27 games and seventh in the month of July.
The M-Braves got some insurance in the top of the ninth inning when Demeritte sent one over the wall in right-center for his team-leading ninth long ball of the season.
Corbin Clouse entered the game in the bottom of the seventh inning and worked 1.2 scoreless innings behind Zimmermann to pick up his fifth hold. Chad Sobotka (S, 4), pitching on his 25th birthday, dealt a 1-2-3 ninth inning to secure his fourth save.
Lago had the M-Braves lone multi-hit performance at 2-for-4 with a run and two doubles. The Braves have won six of nine and will look to win their second-straight series on Wednesday.
The M-Braves and Barons will wrap up their four-game series on Wednesday night at Regions Field. RHP Enderson Franco (3-6, 3.64) starts for the M-Braves against Birmingham LHP Tanner Banks (0-0, --). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm with coverage beginning at 6:50 pm on 103.9 WYAB and the free TuneIn Radio app.
The M-Braves return to Trustmark Park for a five-game series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos beginning on Thursday. For tickets and more information on the Braves, fans can visit mississippibraves.com or call 888-BRAVES4.
