Mississippi Braves News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL - The Birmingham Barons exacted revenge on the Mississippi Braves on Monday night in an 8-1 victory at Regions Field to even the series at 1-1. The Barons scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back.

Birmingham (10-8, 42-44) started the bottom of the first inning against M-Braves starter Ricardo Sanchez (L, 1-3) with four straight singles. The RBI singles came from Zack Collins and Trey Michalczewski and with nobody out it was 2-0. Sanchez coaxed a 6-4-3 double play from Danny Mendick, but Collins scored and it was 3-0 after the first.

The M-Braves (8-10, 37-51) began their top of the third inning with three straight singles from Luis Marte, Daniel Lockhart, and Alejandro Salazar to load the bases. Barons starter Jimmy Lambert (W, 2-1) struck out Connor Lien for the first out and Tyler Neslony reached on a fielders choice - a diving play by Birmingham shortstop Danny Mendick - allowing Marte to score. Tyler Marlette lined out sharply to left ending the inning with the Braves down 3-1.

The Barons got that run back in the bottom of the third inning and took advantage of two Sanchez walks and an RBI double by Michalczewski to go up 4-1. Sanchez began the fifth inning, but walked three straight Barons to load the bases with one out and was lifted for Daniel Lietz. The lefty out of the bullpen allowed two of the inherited runs to score on a fielder choice by Mendick and double from Matt Rose to push the advantage to 6-1. Sanchez gave up six runs on six hits over 4.1 innings with five walks and four strikeouts in his fourth start of the year.

Lietz went on to pitch 2.2 scoreless innings and struck out four. Birmingham tacked on two more runs against M-Braves reliever Tyler Pike in the eighth inning and led 8-1.

Birmingham starter Jimmy Lambert (W, 2-1) pitched a season-high 7.0 innings for the win, giving up just one run on seven hits with no walks and a season-best nine strikeouts.

The M-Braves ended the night stranding 10 runners on base and went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Luis Marte was 2-for-4 and Daniel Lockhart was 2-for-4 with a double on the night.

The M-Braves and Barons will play game three of the four-game series on Tuesday night at Regions Field. LHP Bruce Zimmermann (1-0, 1.46) starts for the M-Braves against Birmingham LHP Bernardo Flores (2-1, 1.35). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm with coverage beginning at 6:50 pm on 103.9 WYAB and the free TuneIn Radio app.

The M-Braves return to Trustmark Park for a five-game series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos beginning on Thursday. For tickets and more information on the Braves, fans can visit mississippibraves.com or call 888-BRAVES4.
