Baby Cakes Earn Series Split with Missions

The New Orleans Baby Cakes went into the All-Star break on a winning note, courtesy of Sunday's 3-2 win over the San Antonio Missions.

A game of oddities saw an inside-the-park home run account for the first run of the day. Tyler Heineman's drive into the right-center field gap in the second inning led to a collision between Trent Grisham and Tyrone Taylor, with the ball coming to a rest as both players lay on the warning track and Heineman trotted around the bases. Following an injury delay, Grisham exited the game under his own power.

It was the first inside-the-park homer for New Orleans since Brian Anderson in Colorado Springs on August 11, 2017.

The strange events continued in the top of the third. After San Antonio evened the score on Nate Orf's RBI double, Tyrone Taylorsingled to left and Orf seemingly scored on the play, but the 'Cakes appealed and Orf was ruled to have missed third base and was called out to end the inning.

Neither team mustered a serious threat again until the bottom of the sixth, when Deven Marrero led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Gabriel Guerrero's two-out single to left to put the Baby Cakes in front for good.

San Antonio mounted a threat of its own in the seventh, loading the bases on a double and two hit batters, but Brian Moran was summoned from the New Orleans bullpen and struck out Cory Spangenberg and Taylor to escape the jam.

Moran also struck out the side in order in the eighth before the Baby Cakes tacked on an insurance run in the bottom half. That run proved to be the difference when Tuffy Gosewich led off the ninth with a home run against Kyle Keller, who settled down to retire the next three batters and finish off his eighth save.

Jordan Milbrath (1-1) picked up the victory after starter Joe Gunkel scattered six hits across five innings. Four Baby Cakes pitchers combined to record 13 strikeouts on the afternoon.

Jon Olczak (1-3) took the loss for the Missions, who settled for a split of the four-game series and dead into the All-Star break with a five-game lead over New Orleans in the division race.

Following the three-day break, the 'Cakes open the second half in Nashville on Thursday for the first of an eight-game road trip.
