New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Isan Diaz for a club-record fifth game in a row, but the Iowa Cubs scored four times in the top of the ninth inning and fought off the New Orleans Baby Cakes, 14-10 on Sunday afternoon.
The Baby Cakes saw their four-game winning streak snapped in the highest-scoring game at the Shrine since May 15, 2011, when Tacoma defeated New Orleans, 18-6.
A back-and-forth affair was tied 10-10 in the ninth when Jacob Hannemann laced a go-ahead single to left field. After pitcher Jordan Milbrath (0-1) committed a throwing error, Jim Adduci ripped a three-run double to finish a six-RBI effort.
Robel Garcia gave Iowa a quick 2-0 lead with a two-out, two-run triple in the first inning, only for Diaz to drill the first pitch he saw from Cubs starter Duane Underwood, Jr. over the right field fence for his team-leading 10th home run of the season.
Diaz became the first player in New Orleans history to homer in five consecutive games, and is now hitting .393 over his last 15 games with seven homers and 15 RBI.
Adduci and Johnny Field each drilled two-run homers in the third to snap a 2-2 tie, and Adduci's double an inning later extended the Cubs' lead to 7-2. But the Baby Cakes responded by sending 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth, with five scoring to knot the score. Gabriel Guerrero had a two-run double and Matt Snyder followed with a two-run single before Yadiel Rivera tied the game with an infield single.
Iowa regained the lead in the seventh when Taylor Davis clubbed a two-run homer off Jose Quijada, the third straight appearance against the I-Cubs in which Quijada surrendered a home run. Ian Happ added a bloop RBI in the inning, his third hit of the afternoon, to increase the Cubs' advantage to three.
Lewis Brinson led off the bottom of the seventh with his fifth home run, and delivered an RBI single in the eighth to draw New Orleans within a run. A passed ball by Davis allowed Diaz to race home to once again tie the game.
Dakota Mekkes (3-0) retired the Baby Cakes in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn the win after starter Duane Underwood, Jr. was charged with seven runs in 3 2/3 innings.
'Cakes starter Ben Meyer was unable to duplicate his six innings of two-hit ball against the Cubs five days ago in Des Moines, allowing seven runs and seven hits in four innings.
The Cubs and 'Cakes continue the four-game set in a Memorial Day matinee, with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
