West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

BOWLING GREEN, KY - The West Michigan Whitecaps scored just seven runs in three games and were held quiet once again as part of a 5-3 loss to the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Monday afternoon at Bowling Green Ballpark.

The defeat marks a three-game sweep at the hands of the Hot Rods, a four-game losing streak, and the second sweep the "Caps have suffered during the second half. They are now 1-10 against Bowling Green and finish the regular season winless in seven games at Bowling Green Ballpark.

The Whitecaps scored the first run of the ballgame as All-Star Ulrich Bojarski roped a run-scoring double into the left-center field gap to plate Sam McMillan and give the "Caps a 1-0 lead. The Hot Rods tied the game on an RBI-single by Jonathan Arenda in the fourth and took the lead an inning later on a single by Osmy Gregorio to take a 2-1 lead. Gregorio excelled for Bowling Green in the three-game sweep, delivering the go-ahead runs in the final two games of the series - including a walk-off RBI-single on Sunday. In the seventh, the Hot Rods put the game out of reach when Izzy Wilson launched a towering three-run home run off reliever Liarvis Breto to extend the lead to 5-1. Rey Rivera collected a two-run single as the Whitecaps tallied a pair of runs in the ninth, but Wenceel Perez grounded out to end the contest, complete the Hot Rods three-game sweep, as well as the season-long dominance against West Michigan.

Bowling Green starter Caleb Sampen (6-3) tossed six innings of one-run baseball while striking out six to earn his sixth victory of the season, while the Whitecaps Brad Bass (1-1) allowed just two runs in five frames and takes his first 2019 loss. The Hot Rods improve to a Midwest League second-half best 14-4, with a 53-35 overall record, while the Whitecaps fall to 7-11 in the back half with a 28-59 overall record. Whitecaps catcher Sam McMillan reached base twice with a single a double while scoring a run in a losing cause.
