Another Quality Brooks Start in Omaha Win
July 2, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, Neb. "" The Omaha Storm Chasers (43-38) got on the board early in a 5-2 win over the New Orleans Zephyrs (37-42), which was more than enough offense for starter Aaron Brooks. The win was the ninth in fifteen games against New Orleans in 2015, securing a season series win against the Zephyrs for the first time since 2012.
Brooks turned in his team-leading eighth quality start of the season, allowing just two runs in 6.2 innings and six scoreless frames to start off his night. Brooks has allowed three earned runs or less in 12 of his 13 starts this season, but it was only his second home win this season in seven total outings (and four quality starts). The right-hander tied his lowest strikeout total on the year with only two in the game, but leads all active Pacific Coast League pitchers with 77 strikeouts in 82.2 innings.
After not scoring against New Orleans in 11 straight innings, the Storm Chasers offense got all the runs they would need to win with a four-run second frame. Matt Fields plated the first run with a RBI single, then two batters later Whit Merrifield went yard for a three-run shot to left. It was his first home run since April 30, and the three RBI were a season-high for Merrifield. Omaha had been held to four runs or less by New Orleans in their last seven meetings before putting up five runs.
Michael Mariot and Scott Alexander both extended their scoreless innings streaks, only letting on one combined baserunner in their 2.1 innings to finish off the win. Mariot has not allowed a run in any of his last ten appearances spanning 14.2 innings, while Alexander has bested that with 12 straight scoreless appearances spanning 18.1 innings.
In the series finale tomorrow, and final meeting with New Orleans this season, the Storm Chasers will send out LHP Buddy Baumann (1-1, 1.80 ERA) to face off with Zephyrs RHP Andre Rienzo (1-4, 2.75 ERA). First pitch on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and MiLB.TV is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
