Fresno Wins Behind A 10-Strikeout Performance By Mike Hauschild

Fresno Grizzlies News Release

EL PASO, Texas - The Fresno Grizzlies (46-34) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they defeated the El Paso Chihuahuas (39-40) for a second straight night, this time by a score of 5-1 on Wednesday at Southwest University Park. After losing four in a row in Reno, the Grizzlies have now won two in a row and remain 6.0 games ahead in first place in the Pacific Northern Division.

The story of the night was Mike Hauschild (0 ER/6.0 IP), who was making only his fourth career Triple-A start and definitely made an impression on the Chihuahuas. The righty struck out a career-high tying 10, including four in a row at one point. His only blemish came in the fourth when he committed a missed catch error to allow Alex Dickerson to reach base and end up on second. One batter later, Rymer Liriano drove in Dickerson with a single to right-center.

However, that ended up being the only run of the night for El Paso, who loaded the bases in the eighth and put two on with no outs in the ninth, but couldn't manufacture another run. Four Fresno pitchers combined to hold them to 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Tony Kemp singled to right to lead off the game for Fresno and scored the first run on a double by Alex Presley. The double by Presley was his third in as many games as the outfielder is now hitting .343 (37-108) with eight doubles, a triple, two homers and 22 RBI over his last 28 games. He'd score on a single by L.J. Hoes two batters later and then Robbie Grossman would add a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 heading to the bottom of the first.

El Paso would draw within two with their run in the fourth, but Fresno infielder Matt Duffy would launch a two-strike pitch from reliever Aaron Northcraft deep over the right-center field wall for a devastating two-run homer (9). It provided him his 56th and 57th RBI of the season, but more importantly gave Fresno a 5-1 lead.

The win makes Fresno 11-3 all-time at Southwest University Park.

Fresno looks to make it three straight wins tomorrow night when they send right-hander Mark Appel to the mound in his second career Triple-A start. El Paso counters with lefty Robbie Erlin, who has lost both of his starts against Fresno this season. First pitch in El Paso will occur at 6:05 PM PT and can be heard locally in Fresno on 1430 AM-KYNO or seen online by MiLB.tv subscribers.
