Another Fresno Grizzlies Player Receives Promotion to Houston Astros

July 2, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release

FRESNO, Calif. -- The first-place Houston Astros selected the contract of Fresno Grizzlies outfielder Alex Presley today. He takes the big-league roster spot of George Springer, who was placed on the 15-day Disabled List with a right wrist fracture. To make room on the Astros' 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Brad Peacock was transferred to the 60-Day DL.

Presley becomes the fourth Fresno position player to be called up to the Houston Astros in the last four weeks, following in the path of Carlos Correa (June 8), Domingo Santana (June 16), and Jon Singleton (June 26). It also marks the second Fresno player to join the Astros within a 24-hour span, as right-handed pitcher Dan Straily was selected by Houston after the conclusion of their game on Wednesday night.

Since June 1st, Presley has hit .343 (37-108) with eight doubles, a triple, two home runs, 22 RBI, six stolen bases, and 18 runs scored. The 22 RBI tie for fourth-most among all minor leaguers in that span, while the 37 hits rank fifth. The June 1st date will be cemented in Fresno Grizzlies history for the foreseeable future as it marked Presley's six-hit performance in Oklahoma City. The career-best performance established a new Fresno Grizzlies franchise record for hits in a single game.

For the season, Presley batted .308 (74-240) with 12 doubles, a triple, two home runs, 35 RBI, 14 walks, 28 strikeouts, 10 stolen bases, and 33 runs scored. The 29 year old is now the eighth player to begin the season with Fresno and receive a callup to the Astros.

Fans shouldn't be discouraged that the callups have left the first-place Fresno Grizzlies lacking talent. The Astros deep farm system has provided ample replacements, with pitchers Mark Appel and Mike Hauschild, as well as position players Tony Kemp and Tyler White receiving promotions from Double-A Corpus Christi in recent weeks. In last night's 5-1 win over El Paso, Hauschild struck out a career-high tying 10 batters, while Tony Kemp went 2-4 with a run scored to increase his overall Triple-A batting average to .315.

Right-handed pitcher Mark Appel makes his second career Triple-A start tonight in El Paso, while infielder Tyler White awaits to make his Triple-A debut only two days removed from winning the Texas League Home Run Derby.

The Fresno Grizzlies return home to Chukchansi Park this Saturday, July 4th, to begin a four-game series against the second-place Tacoma Rainiers, Triple-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. Live music, a Hot Dog Eating Contest (presented by Armour-Eckrich), food trucks, a Chorizo Mac & Cheese topped Hot Dog, first-place Triple-A Baseball, and a postgame Fireworks Extravaganza (presented by ABC30) all will be packed into the Fourth of July celebration in Downtown Fresno. Tickets are still available for the game and can be purchased at the box office, over the phone at 559.320.TIXS or online through FresnoGrizzlies.com.

The homestand continues Sunday night when the Grizzlies honor all past and present military service members during Military Appreciation Night. Discounted $6 tickets are available to them and anyone in their group with proof of military service. The Chukchansi Park Box Office, located on the H Street side of the park, opens at Noon on Sunday.
